I carry from the below the Mason /Dixon to all the way to the Maine camp....
different rules per state....
BUT!!!!!some states I travel through the handgun in lock box & ammo in another lock box in my truck....don't want know trouble

Legal open carry everywhere except for ; state & federal courthouses, federal buildings and installations such as parks, military bases, any premises where on site consumption of alcohol is sold, secure areas of airports, any private property that has posted a prohibition (any home or business that posts an approved sign), schools. No city, town or county government can pass any law to the contrary. We also have a law that gives the right to conceal carry in your own home, on your own lands and that extends to private autos, trucks, bicycles, motorcycles, atv's, etc. Just can't get off your bike or out of your vehicle if concealed carrying.
I do open carry in the rural areas where I live and mostly shop. In the big towns and cities I do not open carry but have a concealed carry permit so I just shift to that. Open carry is a city full of people who don't know what is legal and what is not, is just asking for finger pointing and having your day interrupted.
Never been asked or bothered by LE in the rural areas I like best.

Open carry is legal in my state. But I have a permit to conceal. If its open, then you are exposed and at a disadvantage if a crime is about to take place. Concealed, you have an advantage. My carry is a Sig Sauer P229 in .40 caliber, I have Trijicon radioactive sights plus the Crimson Trace laser. I've had my CPL for about 35 years now.
Never been bothered my law enforcement. But I play by the rules and do the right thing, even when no one is looking. So I have never given them a reason to confront me.

I live in NY and pistol permits are concealed. While there isn't a definitive ban for open carry there are laws about menacing. In general NY gun laws are pretty hard to understand. I had a FFL for several years but drop it. The NY Safe act is a real piece of work. It's about 42 pages long and most people don't have a clue what is actually in it. They would be surprised.
Did you know a Ruger 10/22 can be an assault weapon???
Plus, towns and municipalities can have their own rules
While I'm on my cabin property I do open carry a 22 cal pistol. Mostly to have a noise maker to scare off any animal that might pose a threat. This is only after walking away without eye contact doesn't work. I also have used lady fingers. A trick I learn from a forest ranger when I use to back county mountain climb.

We carry on our land and keep arms when traveling. The nearby Ozark Scenic Riverways Park does not like firearms on the park.
A 22 cal pistol is a handy item to have around.

I'm in Ohio and took the CC course, plus, being a vet I believe I'm eligible for a license anyhow.
After qualifying I actually decided not to get the permit for several reasons. First, LEO's all become aware that you may have a weapon, so any minor traffic stop or interaction with police could turn into a big hassle even if you don't have a gun in your possession. Second, there are so many places you can't bring a gun into, that becomes another hassle and guessing game. It was discussed in the course that you shouldn't even have a gun driving through a school zone. I couldn't figure out exactly what I would do with a hand gun every time I drove by our school. Third, as discussed in the course, even if you use the gun to defend yourself away from home, it instantly becomes an investigation that you may loose if you haven't done everything by the book.
In other words, in a sense if you have a CC license you are kind of guilty until proven innocent. There is always talk of changing legislation, but I'm not aware of anything getting better in this regard.
I have protection at home. There was a lengthy discussion in the class about what you need to do to protect yourself and your loved ones even in your own house.
It's creepy how victim of crimes have fewer rights and less legal safeguards than criminals.

rmak, I was told CPL holders do not bother law enforcement. The fact one submits their prints and applied for it, paid the fee means you are law abiding. Its the pistol holder who doesn't have the CPL that worry's them.
I am not certain they are aware of it? How would they know. Would it come back on a drivers license check?
I have found law enforcement are big believers of the 2nd amendment. More so in the county vs big metropolitan police departments chief LEO's. The front line officers are also defenders of the 2nd too.

Thanks Toyota. That all makes sense. I do believe the instructors might just have gone a little overboard on scaring us so we would stay out of trouble. We were told that if you are stopped in your car for any reason, police know you might have a weapon so you have to be real cautious what you say and do. They gave us a specific procedure and kind of a script to say. I was always concerned that I wouldn't say or do something correctly.
I have heard confirmation on how to handle anyone breaking into your house. I'd hate to be sued by a thief. That would not be cool.
My father in law, a retired Sgt. Major, carries pretty much all the time (legally, of course). He doesn't seem to be concerned about it. I pity to poor fool who makes the mistake of messing with him.

Alabama is open carry. CWP are easy to get with nothing more than a background check, and $20.00. My business takes me to some areas where, though rural, over the past 20 years drugs are the main source of income. I always have a gun on me. The law is 30 minutes away, if they will even come into some areas. Alabama is also a stand your ground state.

One more thing about Alabama gun laws are it is illegal for any law enforcement official to in any way to harass anyone just because he or she is carrying a gun. I saw a survey somewhere that around 46% of people down here in my county carry. 90 +% of families have a gun for home protection. My 74 yr old mother in law never leaves home without her pistol.

Since this is in the Off Topic section of the forum...
In Virginia OC is legal for anyone 18 or older who is otherwise not prohibited from carrying a firearm (felons, etc).
I have done it from time to time and have never had a negative encounter. In fact, people thanked me for exercising my 2A rights, or didn't notice, or noticed but went about their business.
As far as LEO encounters, I've been stopped in my car (forgot to put the new sticker on my tags). I just told the LEO I had a conceal cary permit. He asked if I was carrying. I said yes. He asked where it was. I answered holstered on my hip. He asked if I planned to use it. I said no. He said ok. Then it was never mentioned again.
Stories vary by state, but for the most part people don't freak out, and many LEOs know and abide by the law, especially if there has been a negative event in that county, and they all had to get specific training. Leo over-reaction happened in my city about 10 years ago, and the LEOs now know the law and abide by it. Google "VCDL Manassas Tony's Pizza" if you want info about the incident. By the way, it ended with the Chief of Police and the Mayor sending out a letter of apology to the citizens involved.

In Texas open carry of long arms is permitted. Most police don't realize this and will stop you if you open carry. Here is a guy who was stopped for open carry near my home. He is a combat veteran who was arrested while hiking with his boy scout son. The case is on-going.

I open carry both long gun and pistol at my cabin as 18 miles around me there is private property.

In PA where i live its an open carry state. I got approached by fish and game once when i was bass fishing off the shore. he checked to make sure i had my fishing licences and saw i was carrying. He asked my why i carried and i explained that my small dog with me was bear bait and in case i see a rattle snake. He was OK with my response and informed me killing a rattle snake in Pa without a permit is a 10K fine.

Hate to speak for him, but I sense a person who fears guns. I think it fits this forum. We have cabins out in the middle of no where. With family to protect. Vulnerable to anything, with police hours possibly away. Just like carrying tools, a good first aid kit. tire chains, chainsaw. I need to be the one to take care of the issue. Nobody else to call. From a rabid coon to a Meth head on a 4x4 I need the tools to get the job done. And I feel sorry for those who have been taught fear of a simple tool.
And I do open carry at camp, either a glock on the hip or a carbine over the shoulder or on the ATV rack.

Not surprised at the comment from Project_north. Lots of antis in Toronto. Gun discussions offend them... off topic or not.

That all said, I have a number of firearms and wish our country would at least adopt wilderness carry. Sadly, that is reserved for trappers and others that can prove they are potentially at risk as a result of their employment. Carry permits in general are like hen's teeth here.
Best we can do is a Rossi Ranch hand or short barrel shotgun. I use the latter when up at my property.

MI.... yes open carry is legal.
I have a CPL and have had it for 14 years now. I only Open carry up at the property and the state land that surrounds it. We have bears around and can't be to careful. In the city it's always concealed. I prefer the element of surprise. Got quite a few guns. Prefer the Sig P229 or my old school .357 up-north and the LCP for around town. Looking at a Para 14.45 or something similar for up-north. Like the idea of 14 rounds. Oh and I keep a pos 12ga at the cabin. Again... can't have too many around.

In the hills and mountains I do, not in town. Open carry is legal, but I dont see many that do. Most that carry in towns do it concealed.
I've seen the folks that open carry as a statement. I think many of them are not doing anyone the favor they think they are, especially carrying rifles in town. Most look like rank amatuers and rather like derps.

If you are looking to clarify gun laws including open carry, please confirm the actual code or an informed lawyer. While we all try to give correct info, it may not all be correct (including what I post). I also wouldn't go to the police for clarification.
Alexandria VA police department, just this week, put out a flyer to inform business owners on legal open carry laws. Unfortunately, they got most of it wrong. Fortunately 100's of citizens called to let them know, and now they have apologized and reissued a corrected flyer.
I have a lot of respect for the police. I just don't expext them to know the laws, since politicians like to change them frequently.
