Does anyone own an SSD (solid state harddrive) in an external housing with a USB plug? And do you also have an LCD/LED TV that has a USB port?
If so, can the TV read the SSD in the manner it reads a USB memory stick?

Yes,have been doing it that way for years.I never used a stick but when we plug in the harddrive you just select it like you would a vcr or dvd then the tv pulls up the harddrive and i formatted it into categories like kids shows,movies,comedy etc. Its really quite simple. I also have a long HDMI cable that I will plug into the laptop so I can watch stuff on the bigger tv than the little computer screen

Unless the TV USB port is specifically set up to be an external HD port, I suspect this will not work for a number of reasons. In PatrickH's case it would seem that it is designed for this so your manual may state what options you have. The enclosure controller identifies whether it is a flash type drive or HD (this is why a computer will generally treat an external USB HD differently from a flash drive). This can be changed with some special tools but not easily. Certainly no problem using an SSD in the enclosure as the enclosure controller is what is seen by the device you are plugging into. An external HD is an external HD regardless of the actual type running inside the enclosure (before anyone corrects this - yes there are some basic differences in later operating systems handle the two types).
Is the TV USB port designed to view photos or is it designated as an external HD port? The format of the HD will also impact if it can be read. This could limit the size of the HD you could use.
I don't have a TV with a USB port but I have a blue-ray player with one and it will not read either of the two external USB SSD HDs I have at home - although is likely because of the formatting (which I could not change as they have data). I found an older external HDD and re-formatted it exFAT (the only option I had without using some special software) and the player states that it is not compatible.
What are you trying to do? 128GB flash drives are not expensive (cheaper than an SSD but slower).
