Well, I'm giving myself a Christmas present. A SSD (solid state drive) for my Win 7 laptop. It'll be super fast for starting and I could use a fresh system install anyways. It's a Crucial 512 GB drive; <$200 on amazon.

Yeah, didn't think of that. Without constant spinning it must make a difference, not to mention reduced need for cooling.

All my laptops/systems now use SSDs. I remember the first time I upgraded a laptop to an SSD - the performance increase was amazing and it really extended the life of the laptop. Sizes keep going up and the price keeps dropping!

If you are ever concerned about the lifespan of current SSDs read through a series of articles from "The Tech Report" where they started with six consumer grade SSDs and started read/write testing on them. Eventually some started dropping out (failing) but not before reaching numbers that normal use would never see. As of December, a year after the start, two are still going and have gone past the two petabyte mark. Last report is SSD Endurance and provides a summary of all the previous ones.

Sorry - getting a bit geeky here.

For those of us that are technologically challenged.
You all are talking in a foreign language.

Getting on my laptop without catching a virus is an accomplishment for me

A HDD (hard disk drive) has a spinning disc or set of discs that spin at 5400 rpm, or faster) and naturally has a motor. They usually spin all the time depending on power setting and if the computer is actually being used.

A SSD (solid state drive) has no moving parts. It is just a bunch of electronics, like a bunch of memory sticks in one piece. If no data id being written or read from the SSD it is not using any power. That's one difference.

Another huge difference is the speed of writing or reading data. If you've ever used memory sticks for transferring data the difference between a SSD and a HDD is somewhat like the difference between a memory stick and a 5 1/4 inch floppy.

No moving parts also means a longer average lifespan. Also no moving parts means it is less likely for a SSD to suffer from impact damage.

Installation will not be for a week or so. I have an a lot of install software to organize and prioritize before starting.

You'll love the SSD and boot times. My machines are all SSD and wouldn't have it any other way.

This stuff is way to complicated for me. I'm searching ebay for a used Filson double mackinaw wool coat so I can keep warm until my wood stove kicks in. Merry Christmas to me if I can find one at a good price.

I'm getting a DNA test for Christmas. How's that for a weird one?! My grandmother was adopted so no one knows anything about her heritage. After looking for about 30 years and getting nowhere I told Bob I wanted a DNA test - who's your granny? *LOL* It's a maternal test so it will follow all the lines of the women from me back to Eve.

I don't think I've ever been so excited about a Christmas present before.

Hi Lisa - yes I read about ancestry.com doing them but that is only for Americans right now. I used the FamilyTree DNA website and ordered the MT DNA test (mitochondrial).

Merry Christmas!!!

My wife and I are going light on presents, for each other anyways, so we will get electricity and AC for the cabin.

We bought a new gas fireplace for our house for each other. We are heading to the cabin for an old fashioned, non-commercial Christmas! We hope to try the turkey in the wood stove oven!

SSD sounds good, might like to try one in my Macbook.

I got a 20V Lithium drill and impact driver kit on sale on Black Friday to use to build a deck up at camp next spring God willing.

Also got a super deal on a 40" TV for up at camp to use next year too. Didn't pay much so if it gets stolen at least it won't be so much of a loss. I know many of you don't like TV's at camp but when I'm there by myself I like to watch TV when it's dark outside and there's nothing much to do inside.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Country red, was that an intentional pun??

Light for Christmas, means you are getting lights for Christmas, ie AC

Wife and I got ourselves a Nordictrack treadmill because the $10pm Plant Fitness membership isn't enough to get my butt off the couch. Can't wait for it to get here really. I really liked going to the gym but hated going late at night after the kids are in bed etc. Now I can get up and get it done.
