I would like to start adding onto the cabin this year (itching to pick up a hammer...). Will be putting on a 10x40 front porch and also a 14x26 addition. We don't have ac and the wife and I think a basement/root celler would be great, and I can also move the solar equipment and batteries down there as well. I would like to read more about wood constructed basements but have found little info with Google (that I could find). Anyone have a helpful links on construction method and materials used?

Thanks guys!

Edit - Tried searching "wood basement" on the forum as well before posting this.

I just had a conversation about it last night because I am doing a wooden basement addition on my house (14x26 oddly enough). Some things I hadn't considered:

- 2x8 walls to take the load of the soil behind it.
- there is code regarding the sheathing and how it should be blocked and supported.
- Apparently you need more than standard concrete bolts to anchor the walls. There should be metal ties both on the top and bottom of the walls to keep the wall from pushing in.

I found this link which may be of use to you.

Helpful link but missing details (such as you mentioned). Things such as moisture barrier material (between plywood sheathing and back-fill). For the first time in recent memory youtube has failed me in this regard!

Thanks for the link SAG (to long to type my friend...lol).

We used a pwf foundation on our camp project and it worked out well.

I have a wood basement on my primary home and has been in the ground for 33 years. I built my home from ground up and did all the work. I saved a lot of money! LOL

Mine is a 4 foot crawl space with about 5 foot from ground to joists. Treated plywood 2x8 treated lumber was used. Then 3 coats of tar and then a heavy plastic was added.

Mine is insulated between the 2x8 studs. The wood on the inside is just like I put it in. The outside I have dug up many times in places and looks great. In my area there is a lot of wood basements and I have not heard of any problems. At the time is was very cost efficient compared to cement.

I have been very pleased with mine and no issues.
