One advantage of a hard, snowy winter has been that the pond we had dug last fall is full. The guy who dug it for us said it might take up to two years to fill. We are ahead of schedule! We are going to introduce feeder minnows, cat tails and other stuff this year.

My center pond is man made. actually my dad had the foresite to have it dug out on a dry year in 1967. It has been the focal point ever since. Congratulations on a smart move.

Ponds are great. I've got two of them. Love playing with the pet bass. Finding them batches of minnows is great fun. Plus watching them leap out of the water to catch a bug is very entertaining.
We trim the barbs off hooks and use ultra-lite tackle. This year I'm determine to look like less an idiot fly fishing.
And nothing like watching the sun rise on the pond. We have a pair of geese that hatch their young, do a parade lap then leave.
The ponds are my pride and joy.

I want a small pond at my Northwest Michigan Cabin property. Nothing huge.. maybe 1/4 acre pond. Its sandy soil.. i am told that i "Cant" have a pond in sandy soil. Ive read about Benzonite......

maybe 1/4 acre pond

see the linc above...when I built my pond last fall is 1/4+acre plus...I wish I had made it bigger. The old guy told me if don't hold water to fence it off and get a couple pigs...I thought he was crazy...mine held water fine. I wanted mine full by spring and it was full by Christmas eve. I had a guy spend 5 hours with a huge trackhoe and then we spent 5 hours the next day with a 4x4 Kubota with frontend loader and box blade dressing it up. Grassed and the next day ...and I had a pond.I really enjoy sitting in my chair at the pond. Saw a mayfly spilling eggs in there Friday....a good thing!!! I have a automatic fish feeder I made from a deer feeder to feed daily fish pellets. I bought a solar panel yesterday to keep the batter charged on the feeder. $$$ well spent at camp was the pond....so much enjoyment from it. My 3 GRANDboys will be catching catfish from it soon.

Looks great and your view from the cabin is amazing We have a huge natural pond that our driveway splits down the middle but it is overrun with vegetation. This inspires me to clean it up.

Thanks, everyone.

Naturelover66, did you have test holes dug? That's the first thing the pond builder did on the site. We had a mixture of sand and clay. The higher percentage of clay made it possible to mix with the sand and create the bottom that held water. The guy was a pro so I can't describe exactly how he did it. There was a lot of dirt being moved around and packed. He did mention that if the sand content was high he could have clay brought in, at an additional cost of course.

Nice ponds y'all. I have a small pond in the woods behind our house for the deer to drink from. I would love to have a larger one, but don't have a good water source here at home.

a pond was a must have for our camp. We found the right piece of ground but no pond. It did have good water flow through a draw with natural springs. It was the first improvement we made. It is about 3/4 acre and took 5 days to build. It is 4 years old with the fish being in 3 years. It is best investment we ever made.

We stocked our pond in the spring of 2012 with about 650 fish to begin plus the fathead minnows for forage. We have green hybrid sunfish, copper nose bluegill, channel cats, large mouth bass and some crappie. Up to this year we have been catch and release only, but the fish are eating size this spring so we will begin having some fish frys this summer!

I owe all of the look to my excavator, he and his dad do a complete water line survey with a laser transit then do minimal work above it so when the pond fills it leaves no scars from the equipment.

Be careful of cattails most are invasive and you'll be in there pulling them out - especially if your pond is shallow.

Look for Bulrush, milkweed or other types of plants that aren't invasive, but give that same look.

Yep! My pond is over run with them. Going to take a monstrous effort to clean it up.

Yeah. Thanks! My buddy who's a landscape designer said definitely no cattails. I guess I had images of all the ponds when I was young having them. I appreciate the good advice.

Ponds have the capability to make your mind relax and calm. I can spend my whole day just by sitting at the bank of pond. I wish I could also have a house near pond sometimes in future.
