Hello,
My handle is "Idaho" and I'm gonna build a cabin of some sort. I have purchased and acre in the mountains. There are just a few other cabins on the hillsides around me. I've had my lot surveyed so I know its boundry lines. I also have a flat spot at the top of my long inclined driveway thats about 30X50. I'm not planning on having a well dug, and there is electricity close but I would rather be off grid. There's alot I have to learn before I begin. Saving money, having a plan, learning the right way to approach this project, and figureing out what I want to do. I am pretty sure I want to use a composting toilet. That's about as far as I've gotten.
I'd appreciate any advice and hope to learn alot on this site.

We have 80 acres in SW Idaho. Going with solar, compost and we have a spring for water.
We are starting with 10x12 sheds to get a place to sleep and store tools and materials. This shed has a sleeping loft.

My first building that my wife and I put up was constructed on block peirs (with a bit of gravel under them) then 4X6 treated skids and a 2x6 floor on top of that, insulated and finished off with laying 2X6 lumber accrossed it for the floor then stained. The floor was covered with a tarp during full construction then we cut out the tarp when we were finished avoiding having to finsh off the floor later. After time we had to stuff between the 2X6 with backer rod for the shrinkage of the floor boards. It still made a good floor finished floor. This is basicaly our sleeping area with a double loft and porch. This building was finished off totally with corrigated tin. We cant believe how cool this building keeps when the temps are above the 90's and it also keeps pretty warm in the winters as well.
Our second Building we call our kitchen, we constructed by using the post and beam method using 4X6 pressure treated dug down atleast 3 ft. The roof went on first then the walls, (with lots of windows) we used stucco on this one and then floor was lined with pavers near the end of the construction. We also used a coated tin barrier 16 inch down all the way around to keep out the critters.
We have also build a small post and beam type wood shed with three walls for wood storage and now have started another 12x16 shed which will be our final storage building.
Its fun and also an expereance building using different meathods of construction. You sure learn what to do and what to aviod if your ever going to build again, in which we will.

Here they are, my first 2 projects.
In the picture, now finished,,, the kitchen (building to the right) has the wire lath without the stucco coats and the eves still needing some paint.

Mine started out as an idea. Bought 20.25 acres, some plans online, applied for a permit, a year later, having a blast, even with the lots of work, I ended up with this:

Go for it! Where are you building at? Mikeonbike, looks like you might be out in the Owyhees someplace?
