After a long wait I have begun my cabin. Saturday I bought and had delivered all of the lumber to build the post and beam foundation and to install the floor joists. I am typing this while sitting on the steps leading to the floor joists. What a feeling to see actual progress and to get a picture in my mind of the soon to be finished cabin.

I went with a 12x14 which will have a barn style double slope roof and full loft. The barn style roof will give me more head room upstairs and keep the loft from counting as a second floor by the county. This is important because under the requirements of the county and I will need no permits or safety inspection by the fire dept.

I went with a total of 9 peirs placed 3 down each side and 3 down the center. I place beams consisting of 2 2x6 one on each side of 6x6 posts down about 6 inches from the top. I then fastened the posts to the rim joists so that the beams are held to the posts and supported by the beams. The posts on the 14ft side are place 7 ftoot apart while the posts on the 12ft side are placed 6ft apart with a post in the center. The posts are mounted on big foot deck blocks.

While it is far from done there is no give in the joists even when jumping. 2x8 floor joists 12ft long supported midway does not seem to give at all in the 6ft span between beams.

I am taking lots of pics and will begin posting them soon. This Saturday I will get the remainder of the materials to get it closed in and hope to have it done soon. Once I have the outer walls and roof up I can finish it out as money and time permit but want to have it insulated by winter. I will be putting insulation in the floor as well as the walls and roof. The bottom of the floor is almost 24 inches above the ground and the back is over 48. I will build storage in the high end as well as put water storage and battery compartment there. Of course the battery compartment will be sealed from the cabin and vented to the outside on two sides. Thinking of using one of those sliding trays like they make for truck beds for the batteries.

it's easier to put the furniture in before you put up the last wall..

the window is actually a sliding patio door turned sideways

painted the osb so it will last till the cedar shake goes on the walls..

there are 5 of these turkey that march past my front door almost every day..

got the windows after I built the cabin so putting them in after was fun. the wind got the one and n

That looks great. It makes me want to stretch my 10x12 shed out for more room. My fear is that if the shed is too comfy we won't build the actual cabin.

How deep is your deck? We put a 4x10 on our first shed project and it is pretty narrow for a chair. No room to walk past it.

i will have a 4x10 that will be by the door which i will screen in and use like a mud room but I will also have a 10x12 at the other end as a deck

For now I am sleeping on the hide-a-bed. There is not a loft. I am crammed in the one room for now but it is spacious compared to the small camper. But I am looking forward to getting the bedroom built.

Ok, I just saw loft in your first post but it looks like you have changed from your original roof design.

I think my next structure will have shed roof but that might change. I have all winter to think about it.

What do you plan to use for the final siding?

The available funds and time until winter bwas the reason for the change. I had to change my mind on a lot of things due to funds. But what is built is paid for so I can accept the changes and thinking about that.

Siding will be cedar shake. I will cover the osb with tar paper and then put on the shakes. Also, I will put latice around the bottom for looks.

At first I was not happy about not having a flat spot to build but the space underneath will be used up with water tanks and composting toilet tank. Also storage for tools and a battery box.
