question for those who use bucket traps...if you use water, does it keep the dead mouse smell down? Do they sink? I don't want to use antifreeze because then I have to dispose of it somehow. I'm at the cabin about every week or so. A dead mouse left on the floor for a week leaves a horrible smell. Not sure about one in a bucket of water though.
Thanks!

The newer antifreeze is not poisonous like the old stuff was. Look for Propylene glycol antifreeze. Propylene glycol is used in much of the food today as well as a main ingredient in e-cigarette liquids.

Get a cat litter scoop to scoop out the victim and keep the antifreeze container and you can always pour it through a funnel back into it's original container then haul out.

Absolutely not to both questions. They bloat up and float at the surface (at least mine did).

straight water for any length of time would be rather gross. But I use my antifreeze for years. Clean the mice out, top off with water the odd time. Not really much of a disposal issue. But when you need to, you can take it home to an recycling facility.
Bury or burn the mice to something else doesn't eat them.

I used some window washer for vehicles and that works well also. I have had mine set up for 3 weeks now and not one critter has been there. I guess I don't have any or not many around my place. I have never seen one around there yet. I think the big bull snakes keep them cleaned up. Lol

I don't use bucket traps but I do set the old fashion type mouse traps. I don't set them unless I know I can check them in a couple of days. I have set as many as ten and caught eight. I learned by experience to not set them and leave them for a week or so, bad, bad smell. I call this running my trap line.

UPDATE: after 5 days of being gone, I caught only two mice. The antifreeze seemed to do a good job at keeping the smell down. I was expecting no less than 10 given all the activity I've seen and heard in the cabin but at least I'm reducing the population one or two at a time.
