I power my cabin with an Onan 12,000 KW propane generator with an inverter system and battery pack hooked up. The batteries will last almost a whole weekend of use if it is just me there. When the family comes up, they like the luxuries of TV, movies, videogames, blow drying hair, microwaving popcorn, etc... so it uses more power. The generator will kick on when the inverter decides the batteries need a charge. It is a worry free system and makes the cabin pretty much like you are in town; without the city rush.

That sounds like a significant, but very reliable investment. I hope it works out for you.

What's your propane consumption like with that setup?

I run a smallish propane jenny when I need it, 3500watts, from www.northerntool.com , but this website has some really interesting stuff, like one that runs on vegitable oil...seriously, veggies. http://www.generatorsales.com/
