So here I am in Oregon, YAY and FINALLY, checking on the land and meeting with the builder tomorrow. I spent the afternoon on the mountain walking about and visiting with some neighbors.  (Before meeting up with GaryO and Cabi!!!! SO exciting and a fantastic time!!!)
The land looks great. There won't need to be extensive clearing. One of my neighbors is a volunteer firefighter and said he'll keep an eye on things for me. He has a dozen years of construction experience, too, and I will be happy to hire him for projects.
It's a good piece of land. About 2.5 acres. I hope I can get pics to post from my phone. Didn't know I could post at all from my phone until tonight!

It's been a long road but the adventure begins now.

Julie, rule #1 when photographing land..one cannot take pictures while lying down hugging said land! Hahaha. Looks beautiful, I just loved the Oregon landscape when I did a 16 day road trip there. Wish we could see your face, bet it's just beaming! Safe travels.

Thanks, all! I have more pics but I'll add when I get home. It's a lovely spot with plenty of great areas on the parcel to site the cabin.
I didn't get to meet the builder this morning, grrr. It was pouring, and the water on the roads was sending my rented roller skate's tiny wheels into a tizzy so I had to abort the trip about 10 miles into it.  I made the right call but was disappointed. I called to give him a heads-up and we chatted by phone. I'm going to try to get to their office Monday morning.
Gah, I wish I had my 4WD Saabaru here! I don't like this Fiat. At all.

Oh, forgot -- good eye, Creeky! Indeed, the previous owners excavated a bunch of rocks from the back of the property and also started cutting a number of logs. They must have been planning to build their own cabin. They'd already started a little frame for something. It's in one of my other pics.They'd done quite a bit before a health/financial situation forced them to sell and move. The driveway area is impressive.

Is it generally flat in that area in general, or is it just flat in that small area? Northwest Ohio is so flat it looks like it was graded by a gigantic bulldozer and covers several hundred square miles. Of course it's all farm land but trees are few and far between! It appears you have some "woods."
You will love it! We have a fifty acre hill and it's beautiful..but it's a little hard to navigate at times. There are pluses and minuses for about all properties on here..
Are you going to be staying in Oregon now or do you have to return to Texas and then come back when you start the "build?"

Looks like nice flat area for a cabin. Build in the middle of an opening, you want no trees at a minimum of about 60 feet all around you and then gravel around the cabin to the vegetation line. Use casoron granules to keep vegetation from growing. That is the same landscape as my place, ie ponderosa pines and pine grass, just not as dense. I am thinking fire protection. Metal roof and cement siding (Hardi-Planks)
That will have 2 seasons, cold winters, warm summers. The humidity will be much less than Texas. You will love it. As for those cold winters, have plenty of firewood before winter and when you wake up to fresh 2 feet of snowfall, toss another log on the fire, get your nice warm slippers on and have some hot cakes and a nice cup of hot chocolate.

old old buddy, It's on a mountain so, no, the parcels generally aren't flat. This section doesn't slope, though, and 2 parcels came available right when I was looking!
Another plus is it abuts BLM land, and they have a fire prevention/mitigation plan in practice and maintain a buffer zone between my land and theirs. The forest looks like it's in pretty good shape.
There's a small working quarry on the mountain and it won't cost much to get various types of crushed rock brought over for the driveway, landscaping, and building.
The neighbors said the inspectors and code enforcement guys with the county are great to work with, actually. They come up with simple solutions. That news makes me happy. They said not to worry -- they're NOT going to treat my small cabin like they would a big home so as long as I get the test pits dug and such, they'll come up with something realistic for my greywater. Not a huge system. Just keep making progress and all is well.
