I want a mule, too, Cabi!!! Sometimes the Forest Service retires one and adopts it out for a small fee! Already pack trained and everything!

Mules are awesome. I know a few people that have them, sure footed and smooth riding. Plus they will pack a Load! I just think they're cool. And Julie, what better way for an animal to live out its golden years.

Exactly right!!! Several months ago, I saw a Forest Service mule named Jeremiah up for adoption in Oregon. If only I was there already, sigh. They retire them when they're about 15 years old so they have quite a lot of years left.
From what I've read, mules are easier to keep than horses, too. Their feet aren't as delicate and don't have as many hoof issues and they have a broader diet. They can be quite protective of the homestead. I'll have to keep my dogs away from the mule, though. They're generally not fans of dogs.

I picked this up from a neighbor about 10 years ago for less than a used ATV. It needed a lot of work and I had to learn a lot about tractor mechanics. It's amazing how easy it is to get parts. I guess it's true, "Old tractors don't die...they just need a new part once in a while." That's my homesteading consultant (dad) is at the wheel.
