Since my wife won't be letting me build an off-grid house anytime soon, I have thought about maybe a small cabin in the woods.
Where do I start? The first thing would be convincing her that it would be a good idea / investment / fun. So... How do I do that?

For us it is more of a getaway experience – feeling of being somewhere else than your day-to-day work/home life.
It breaks your daily routine and brings variety.
It's also great if you have some related hobby to occupy your time there, like fishing, woodworking, crafts, photography, reading...
or just sip wine at the campfire in the evening – great stress reliever. ;-)

i started looking a couple of years before i accually bought . i started by looking close to home but property was way to expensive so i had to expand my search . when i started looking my gal said no way , but i kept watching the listing on the various sites on the computer . i would show her the photos in the listings , finally she said " it might be nice to have a place to go ". i kept searching and found a cheep spot but a long ways away , i bought it , came home , showed her the photos and she was hooked . we make the property our summer vacation location .
the place i bought was cheep enough and it was easy to get a loan . things are changing quickly around here and these types of deals are getting harder to find . but they ares till out there.
ours has gone up a bit in value so we will not loose money and i look at it as a savings account , once we can not enjoy it anymore we can sell it .

Hi Indianasolar - My husband and I were talking about this topic just this morning. We found our cabin together while on vacation in 2001. It was love at first sight even though we weren't looking for something. We purchased it on the spot even though there were a lot of details to work out after the fact. For the first four years it was our vacation home. For the next two years it was our part-time home, and now it is our full-time home. We couldn't be happier.
Just recently our cabin was highlighted in "Our Canada" magazine and we got lots of positive feedback. It seems like there are lots of people thinking of finding their own little piece of paradise. I hope by now you have found your own. - Margy

well i bought my land off ebay yes that right sight unseen from ebay. most ppl in the area prob thought i was crazy just knockin on doors and looking for someland i had only a general location on. lucky it wasnt taht hard well i sy that i thougth a diffrent lot was mine untill i got it surveyed and come to find ot mine was a better one.... its not a big spot just a subdevision lot in the middle of nowhere but it beats the city... i just bouhgt it then told my wife she wasnt to mad considering i got it for 400.10 yep tahts right 4 hundred bucks cant beatthat with a stick

I enjoyed reading the stories posted on this thread. Seems like everyone who ends up with a cabin property has a unique story as to how it happened.
I looked for property for about 2 years before I bought a place. I was able to get into the edge of the Appalachian Mountains at about 2 1/2 hours from home. I like it out there because the land has a lot of character -- rock formations and steep ravines. My wife has had absolutely no interest in it. I told her that having a wilderness property was a spiritual requirement for me. She said "Fine, but don't expect me to go out there". She has never set foot on the property, but encourages me to enjoy it.

I like quail hunting out in the desert. At the time we purchased our property we were living in the mountains in Northern New Mexico. I had to drive over three hours to get to the area I liked to hunt in. My wife suggested I look for a place in the area I could use as a base for my hunting exploits. I was already familiar with the area so most of my search was by the internet. If I found something interesting I contacted the realtor and asked about covenants. I read all the documents before I looked at the property. I didn't want my judgment clouded by falling in love with a place after seeing it. After studying all the coveanants for the various parcels and developments in the area I picked one that had the least restrictive covenants. I looked at several parcels there and picked one. It was a cash deal so I had some negotiating power since raw land is harder to finance.
On the day the deal closed started construction of a small cabin. I have continued building since. At the time I lived 3 hours and 10 minutes away so I could go there often. It was my get away for some quiet time. Now I live 1500 miles away so I go every other month for a week or two. I just got back from two weeks there.
I think one of the most important factors in choosing a place is the distance you need to travel. I set a limit on myself of three hours and I ended up slightly over that. If you have to go too far you will burn out on the drive. Now that I live so far away I am considering leaving my pick up in New Mexico and flying back and forth. It would probably be cheaper than buying gas and it would give me more cabin time. The down side is I usually bring a truck load of tools and an atv.

Call it a vacation cabin and sell her on fishing, backpacking, scenic drives etc.
Once the cabin is built add solar and propane. Let her decorate and soon she will want to live there all the time.
My girlfriend is a city girl and has her own place but she loves staying in my cabin and would live there all the time (if i let her) but I am still foot loose and fancy free as the saying goes.

boy.me and the big guy have always wanted land. a place to build of our own.our own cabin or house built by us.land paid off.and now we finally got the land paid off and the cabin on.all the years we tried...we still had kids at home and it was just too much to handle it all.so now we have one and a half years to retirement and we are doing.we are going slow but we are doing it.we hurt but feel better for building the place.i hope we live long enough to actually get out to our place and live.if not-we have had a hell of a fun time making the place.cabingal3
