After looking at the cost of propane fridges...even used ones....I'm looking at the option of purchasing a used newer fridge (energy efficient) then running it with my 3000 watt inverter Yamaha generator. A friend did it for awhile...ran the genny for a few hours when he arrived at cabin then shut it off and would run for an hour every 4 hours. Didn't run his genny at all at night. Said it kept the fridge cold , no problem.
Anyone see any problems with this idea?
PS. Wife is tired of the cooler, wants something with shelves.

The problem for me would be having to be there to run it every 4 hours. But if you can deal with that then sure it will work

FishHog, We're up mainly weekends or a week at a time and when I'm there I'm usually working on my lot or cabin..so being close is not a problem. Thanks.

We use the Honda to power our cabin right now including the fridge.
It works well especially since fuel prices dropped. The down side is listening to the genny instead of nature.
I would recommend running the genny until you decide on a solar system or can hook into the grid.
For the record though I am jumping on the band wagon and going solar. Silence is golden.

Thanks Seabee...totally agree on the silence is golden! So, do you cycle the genny on / off as needed to cool the fridge or keep it going constantly?

I used to leave the genny on all the time since I always needed a power source for a project. Last year I wired up a Magna Sine inverter with a couple 6 volt batteries. Now I am cycling the genny. On for a couple hours off for a couple hours. It is working well so far......

Bush Bunkie, we usually freeze water bottles at home and leave those in the fridge when we are not running the generator. Turns it into an icebox.
We use the frozen water bottles in the cooler for the trip to the cabin. Once at the cabin we rotate the bottles between the freezer and the refrigerator. The bottles are in thefreezer when the genny is running and in the refer when the genny is off. It works well for us in Alaska. Maybe some folks in warmer climates would like fo chime in.

I run the 1900 (continuous wattage) Ryobi no more than 12-14 continuous hours daily on ECO mode that consumes a little more than a gallon of gasoline to power the 4 cubic foot refrigerator with separate freezer compartment (has its own door) and various electronic equipment. The downside is that it tethers us to the cabin, making trips away for more than day putting food in the refrigerator at risk of spoiling.
BTW, my cabin is in NYS (Southern Tier), so it ought to work for you in Ontario.

i would still keep your eye open on kijiji or local forsales or have friends and family looking for someone getting rid of an older trailer i have 3 on the go off and on through the year one came with the trailer i have one i had given to me and the other i got for 75 bucks ... there is a guy down by me that has an older lp fridge for 300 but he said it has to be ran out side not what i was looking for.. look at the ad it is likely by north bay

nothing more i hate then listing to is a generator well the wife complaining is a close 2nd so to kill 2 birds with one stone when the wife starts so does the generator ...

thanks copperhead.....I haven't closed the propane fridge idea, but here (Ontario, anyway) I am having a hard time finding any half decent fridge from a trailer that the guy doesn't want $200 - $300. bucks for....and they are 30 years old with no guarantee for how long they will actually work or if they will need a refill...which is big bucks too. if I can find a deal from someone I know, I would still jump on it.

Copperhead...checked the one on kijiji a few weeks ago...yup...if it wasn't in North Bay (I'm London area), it would be worth a look.
