Nathan. you understood it correctly. I guess mine is going to be the fireplace. I have some big plans for the hearth and scroll work I'm putting on it. I liked the "sofa and beer" responses too. ;D

In the summer it's the porch...in the winter it's the woodstove and fridge!

In the summer it is ICE. After living out of a cooler for a number of years the addition of a propane fridge with freezer makes life alot easier. In the winter it is a toss up between the wood stove and the wood fired hot tub.

Edit Edit....... Maybe in the summer it is the L5 shower, or the deck, or the abiltiy to hunt and fish almost from my deck.

Now that i put some thought into this, i think i like everything about my cabin except the part about working and not being able to be there 24/7

I feel your pain. It's been over 25 years at camp using a cooler. For what we paid for ice and fuel to get said ice we could have a propane refrigerator. It's finally going to happen this summer. I have saved the thousands needed to purchase and have installed a CSA compliant propane refrigerator.

Back to the topic at hand:
The Kitchen:
I love my kitchen and spend a lot of time cooking at the cabin. I travel for a living and don't have the time or energy for my delicious home cooked from scratch meals. So when I'm at the cabin I love to cook.

The Sofa:
It is set in front of a big window. Our morning always starts with a few cups of freshly ground coffee from my hand cranked 100 year old coffee mill, brewed in a 1940's stove top percolator. We sit on the sofa and listen to the marine radio for the weather report and than do some reading. It is also a great spot for some mid afternoon napping.

Great question...The idea of having our property and cabin is so we can outdoors often. I would have to say the living room couch in the winter, and our picnic area the rest of the year.

Ironically, my best thing on the inside of the cabin is ... a view of outside.

Silverwaterlady: Congratulations on the propane fridge! You will love it. The new one's are so nice and very efficient. Got ours through Ben, s Discount in NV. Shipping to Canada was not too bad. Back to the question - the wood stove. Open concept.

People have sat around a fire for as long as there's been a fire to sit around. The hearth, I believe, has always been the center of human activity. After all, up until a short time ago in history the hearth/fire provided some important basic needs, warmth, light, cooked food, safety. Light bulbs and modern appliances have drawn us away. But I think we all want to return.

I read an interesting article once that suggested television has replaced the hearth as the center of human activity in the home. The idea was that it usually is placed in a central location and the changing images throw off a flickering light like a fire. Something in our primitive nature compels us to sit around it. That is why people watch it for hours while complaining the programs are terrible.

Like most of us here I'm hoping my cabin will take me back to simpler times when things made more sense. I'll be putting in my woodstove soon. I hope it will be a place of comfort and peace.
