Anybody been snowed in at their cabin? What's the longest time you've been snowed in? Learn anything from it?
With the blizzard coming today... i was considering going to our cabin to get snowed in (at least for the weekend). We're looking to get 30" of snow dumped on us today and tomorrow.
I got plenty of wood, food, water... could be fun.

Sounds like fun Rich. I wish I could be at my cabin this weekend but I am still too fresh off of heart surgery. We are to get about 6 to 8 inches the way it sounds but if the storms moves a little we could get blasted with much more.

I have never been at a cabin when a blizzard hit but have been snowed in for 5 to 6 days. A lot of those days no heat but a small oil stove that would heat just one small room. If thee was any kind of storm a blizzard would be the best one to be in. That is my opinion. That is if you were not totally caught in it and have are prepared. Living in the north people are prepared for blizzards and not a huge deal just need to be ready.

Don't forget the snowshoes. My favorite thing to do after a fresh snowfall is to walk in the woods......

My dream is to be snowed in at my cabin. This is especially good since I'm the guy whose always expected to be at work cleaning up the mess when no one else can get there. One ice storm I cut to work via a chainsaw. There were so many tree blocking the road. I had a wagon train of people following the path I cleared. Not one of them helped. But I did get the last laugh. Once I got to work they were on their own a there was a large tree blocking the road.
My cabin is always stocked with emergency supplies. Plenty of MREs, water bottles, a water filtration unit in cause I have to drink from my stream and a good stock pile of wood. I grew up with blizzards so I have little fear of them. No way would mine or me ever freeze to death. My nortic survival skills are excellent. Food would also be a non issue. The land could provide

We're getting a 12"+ here, and none predicted at the cabin. Always better off at the cabin than home. Wood heat, generator, solar, spring water. 4 chains for the truck and a chainsaw will get me out of any snow under 20". No issues as long as we don't have a accident. i would love to get snowed in there as well. Only 2 #10 cans of freeze dried food but plenty of squirrels to fry up!
Ready at home as well, but with propane heat.

It seems that the storms on the east coast start here on the west coast and work their way east. Hate to tell you, but we got one blowing in from the Pacific right now, should catch up with you in a few days. Not a heavy one, at least here.

I've said to my wife many times I'd love to be at the cabin when a big storm hits and get snowed in. I was up there last year when we had a decent dumping but not enough to keep stormed in. We love to snowshoe as well and put on the cross country skis! Being off grid means not caring if the power goes out!

I've lived in the snow belt of upstate NY my entire life and had grown to detest winter and snow immensely, but when we first bought our cabin in the mountains we bought a snowmobile and went up a few times in the middle of winter.
There must indeed be magic in having a mountain cabin because even in 30" deep snow and zero temps I actually enjoyed the experience. Not only enjoyed, but loved being in the solitude and snow.

I'm at the home base in Prince William County. Got the plow on the ATV. Went to the store and got Bread, Milk, and Vodka. I think I''m ready.

Spent the day pushing snow and getting it off the roof of the high tunnel, it was tough work but I kept the better half on task clearing the sides of the high tunnel then we went inside and began knocking the snow down by bumping the plastic with a pushbroom taped to a pole. there's still 3 rows of greens alive and happy even though the max/min hanging on the wall just inside recorded +3*F the other nite. Double row covers have held enough ground warmth on the plants I guess. I don't like a structure that can't take an occasional heavy snow load though, seems I've somehow picked up a whole nuther job in the snow. A greenhouse... same structure with heat, would fire up the boilers and go into snowmelting mode. I'm starting to visualize a couple of rocket heaters in there.
Our driveway is quite steep so I staged the tractor up top last night and did tractor luge this morning when we had about 8" built up. I got back near the top one more pass and that was it. From there I go down to the barn/ garden/ hightunnel and chicken elevation and cleared the roads around that, only got into the fence once. I can take it down to the bottom drive at the sawmill after the snow is over and push our way out to the state road, no particular hurry. Somebody asked, we've been snowed in for a month before. We could have gotten out if really needed but it was a pleasant way to pass the time.
The sled run down the driveway is wicked fast, if you miss burying in the snowpile at the bottom of the first section there is that 80' ski jump, but it just adds to the experience.
There's actually enough snow to build up a banked turn...

Dave Bell... my home is in Prince William County too. I just went out to the 7-11 to fill the truck up on gas, and to get Hostess Snowballs for the family!!!
Gotta love Hostesss Snowballs in a snowstorm!

At least you have a plow! We're experiencing our first southern winter storm here in Charlotte. Not a plow in sight! Not that I expected to see any. I know, I know, it's all in the location, but I just gotta chuckle at all the hoopla down here over just a few inches of sleet.
I'm seriously thinking of donating a snow shovel to the HOA here just to stay in good graces and thank them for allowing me to park in the street during our extended stay!!!

Yeah, I can imagine the fun that was. I'm still happy we don't have to deal with a lot of snow. Of course the hill to our cabin is about as bad as Don_P's, but at least ours is recreational.

Many states share county names. My cabin is in Lancaster Va. Or if you like Amish people, please go to Lancaster PA. Many many county names is this country are named after places that our ancestors came from. That's why there's so many duplicates.
A Google search does indicate only one Prince William County.

It's all in how your county is prepared. I understand in places where it does not warrant to have plows on stand by it can be a little tricky.
Still makes us Canadians chuckle at how, what we see as a little snow, can totality paralyse a county. We have amazing machines here and rarely have a call for state of emergency.
I do remember the Ice Storm of a decade ago!

The weather is crazy! At our home in Toronto we have a tiny patch of snow under the pine tree, and the lake at the cottage is just now safe to cross. While the US east coast is getting hammered. Very strange

If you don't get the moisture, you don't get the snow. One inch of rain equals 10 inches of snow. This recent low pressure system was pumping moisture out of the Gulf and Atlantic up at the 10,000 - 15,000 foot level into a cold air mass.

I knew that soil looked different. If you know the geology, I ran into what I believe was chunks of sulfur in the clay near lake Anna while digging footers. We pulled into a campground there off season thinking no problem, we would find the jobsite in the morning. The campground was full and strangely lit all night long, they had a crew there changing rods. Y'all were talking about Prince William Co, I worked on one of the park admin buildings in the Nat'l Forest there. I think pay came through congress, it took forever.
