My wife and I are taking a beekeeping class, and plan on creating an apiary at our cabin property...

Are any of you beekeppers?

Anyone have "bear fence" to protect your hives? If so, I'd like to see photos.

Thanks!!

I thought this was going to be about menacing yellow jackets and hornets, slaps, stings, welts, punches, kicks, and garden hose attacks.
And tears..
I got stories about that stuff.
But I don't keep bees.
Wish I could tho. Honey is the best natural sweetener imo..

The Swamp Talk forum , has a section where they discuss beekeeping, problems etc. Also a lot of topics that off griders might find interesting. Hunting trapping, food preparation.

Thanks!!!

If you want to talk about other than honey bees, go for it.

I was surprised to find holes in the ground which were about 6" in diameter and about the same depth... Found out that skunks can dig out yellow jacket nests.

I always keep Benedrill on hand while at the cabin!

We don't have bees but we do go to a place where the man sells honey from his own bees. He is a very, very wealthy man!! There is lots of money in honey. This man sells honey to local markets but you can also go to his place and bring your own mason jars that he will fill up for you. One thing he does that is very profitable, is that he "rents" out his bees to farmers to pollinate their fields. He says that is an extremely lucrative business.

From what I have heard about apiaries, the honey is a by-product of the pollination that bee keepers use in the growing season. Other bees give honey bees a bad name. These bees are apparently not aggressive and only sting occassionally. The keepers rent out the hives or are nearby to crops that need pollination. Cranberries for instance, do not give the bees enough sustenance so the hives hive to be placed near something like Goldenrod to build them up again. The bees are susceptible to disease and have to treated every so often - bee mites. There can be good money in this but it is a lot of work. A bad winter can kill off several hives as well as an early spring if their food source is not available yet.
