We're just about ready to tuck in our SC in for the winter. We don't have a four wheel drive vehicle and with snow and wet, muddy roads looming ahead it is unlikely that we will be cabineering much in the next few months. How 'bout you?

When enough snow hits our mountains to prevent wheeled access we use our snow shoes. Maybe mid December into April

Yeah, not until next April/May, now.
This last March, the wife and I got within a hundred yards, thanks to the locals with plows, but the ice under the 3 ft of snow made things a bit treacherous for us aging round feeders. Got some burn piles taken care of though.
Might attempt it before end of 2010 if we get a break in the weather. Those road cams are sure a boon.
Saw it was snowin' like a banshi a few nights ago, ice everywhere, trucks poking along....

we were just at our land this past weekend, likely for the last time this year.. we will try and go in mid jan/feb just to see what it looks like with snow on the hills.. (and make sure the trailer doesn't cave in, lol..) ..
If we were really lucky and we had a warm spell in Jan and the temps dont' get to below freezing, I bet the wife and I would spend a night..
If I tell her we can shop (we cross the border) after 24 hrs, it helps convince the overnight trip is a good idea. :) hehe

We don't get much snow, I just don't like the cold so I won't be making many overnight trips this winter. Even in my drafty trailer the catalytic heater makes me nervous

Weather has been incredible this week so I'm taking off Friday to get some more stuff done and spending the night out there.

I have never been a fan of winter in my adult life. We live in a "lake effect snow" region and if it's not snowing or blowing you can bet money that it will be a grey, overcast day on any given winter's day around us. Since we've had our camp, however, I have enjoyed the snow and winter a lot more. The quiet winter beauty of the woods and mountains are stunning and breathtaking. I will go up to camp as much as I am able to do so in the winter.

I was up doing the final construction on the shed this last weekend but we got 2-3" of snow this week so unless we don't get anymore for awhile or it melts off a bit I probably won't be up until after spring thaw.

I would love to be able to snowshoe in like MtnDon but the road closes about 10mi. from our place so unless I want a looong hike I'll have to get a snowmobile.

I would really like to have winter access so the snowmobile might happen. I'll have to find a friend with one to take me in and see what the trip is like mid-winter. I'm not sure how the machines would do without a groomed trail.

Gary,

Does the Sun Pass Snotel site give you a good indication of the weather and precip at your cabin? We have a Snotel site near us and it lets me watch the weather at the cabin all winter.

Does anyone else use a Snotel site?

MikeOnBike, do a test run with a friend's sled if possible to get a feel for the ground and trail. One of the issues I have wth my sled is that it isn't really set up for deep snow and trailbreaking but I nose it along and don't have too much of a problem...usually.
Look for a trail specific sled, one with a long track & preferably 2-up seating for passenger comfort, unless of course you are solo. Reverse will be real handy also if you bury yourself in a snowbank.

I just created a spreadsheet and grabbed the last 20yrs. of monthly precip data off the website. At some point I need to add the snowpack to my spreadsheet. Pretty easy to play with...

We spend most of our winter downtime at the cabin. I can push through about 3' of snow in my Jeep ok but much more than that we need to use the snowmobiles or snowshoe into the cabin. Once I have a good parking pad bladed out we can get off the road to park our rig and also room for another truck. I relish the time spent at the cabin in the winter. Awesome information on the snowtel site! I found an enhanced sensor site really close to my place! Thanks for the information, this looks pretty interesting...

I spend one or two weekends a month at my cabin. In the winter, it is just me, the trees, and the animals.

I have to snowshoe in across the lake and fire up the four-dog stove. On the cold weekends, if I plan to stay overnight, I have arrive early and fire up the stove. It takes most of the day to heat up the log walls.

With the pinnapple express weather we've had in our area, Cabi3 and I ventured down to the cabin, 240 mi thru the pass and into the high desert..just got back. Two feet of snow.

Bobrok, I can't say it better, and I recommend a winter trip if you can. It's an awsome season.

My cabin is about a mile from a plowed road, so we either snowshoe or snowmobile in. Haven't been there to stay since November for deer season. Holidays plus extreme cold weather have kept us from going other than two weeks ago when me and a friend snowshoeed in to shovel the roof. Really didn't need the shoes except for the last 100 yards because the snowmobile track on the access road was hard enough to support regular boots. I'm glad we did it though because the old roof was holding a lot of weight, snow up to your knees and heavy from a surprise early January rain. Looks like the coming weekend will be warmer than normal, maybe up to 30, I'm sure we'll be staying at some cabin this weekend - if not ours, at a friends.

Hope all are enjoying the winter, it's a challenging, but unique and beautiful time of the year.

Hey, welcome back Gary! Family stuff is preventing me from making a cabin trip so far this winter...that and the fact that it was -35 degrees (F) up there last night.
So I sit at home and stare at my snowmobile and wish.....

Oh no, that'd be about 35° colder than my posterior could stand.

It only got down to 20°F the night we stayed, but that day we built up a lather when burning slash piles and darn near froze our putooks off when sitting still (sweat freezes, imagine that).

It was wonderful out there though

I've made day trips to the property a few times this winter. With all the snow and the temperature changes it's been a muddy mess out there

Yeah, I do want to get a test ride in before I commit. One of the guys I work with sleds a lot. He is a real encyclopedia of information on sleds. Knows what models and years have good records. He zeroed in on the long track trail model from my discussions about our place. My mom wants to wait to build her place for another year so 'maybe' we will build our cabin this year. Maybe.

Cool. This one's gonna be the big one as far as snow storms go from what I'm hearing. Not that some of the others were nothing to sneeze at.
We should all get together and do a communal snow depth report from all points represented on this forum as of a specific time when it's all over.
