This past winter of 2016 (it's spring here) really showed some glaring advantages over on grid power was one huge glaring fact that my area experienced 9 power outages and I didn't even know it other than when the grid power goes out so does my Internet but that was a non issue as my DVD player took up the slack and life went smoothly on.

How bout you?

Good for you groingo. Wish I could report the same..
In my inaugural first winter season off gridding, I've learned some hard lessons about my solar panels and my battery bank.
Basically, choose the right batteries(not cheapies) from the get-go. And maintain them! Out of my control, I went too long without making visits to the cabin this winter. Consequently, snow accumulated on my panels, and my bank went too long without a charge. Im certain at least one of my batteries froze.
Live and learn.
Next winter will be better

So you're staying with solar, groingo? I thought I read you were going back on-grid?

I'm glad it went well! Keep the faith!

Julie:
After trying to get any kind of consistent answer from the power company and finding one caviat after another (in the very fine print) I decided to invest in myself and stick with solar, especially with all the on grid outages this past season. it made my system look that much more appealing!

That's awesome! I don't think you'll be sorry. There's a learning curve with solar but you've put so much into it and you're there!
