My cabin sits on two skids which in turn sit on four blocks. Due to the nature of my soil, I must jack up each corner and shim or add gravel to the pad underneath each block once a year. I would hold the contractors level each time and squint at the bubble.

This weekend after I was finished washing the dishes I put the dishpan on the floor and it occurred to me the dirty water was indicating which corner was lower than the rest. It actually helped that the water was dirty since it would be darker in the corner that was lowest.

I still used the level to double check my shimming but the small dishpan worked quite well. No glasses (on my face) required!

Well, to be completely on the level, I've heard of this technique before.

The ancient Egyptians dug trenches and filled them with water to determine level. In this way they did their level best to keep the pyramids geometrically accurate.

You can make a water level with a garden hose. Attach a short length of clear plastic pipe to each end of the hose, fill with water, set one end in one location and the other end in another location. The water levels in the hose always find, well, level.

Using this technique you can level the playing field with the other builders in your area.

I wouldn't want to level a charge against you unnecessarily, but I have to say that dirty dish water is probably not the best way to do this. But practicing with these different methods you will find your own level of confidence. As you are doing so, your degree of skill will quickly grow and then level off at a high measure of competence.

These techniques should help you level out your floor.

I guess I have either raised this discussion to a new level, or lowered myself to a new level.

I guess it goes to show that method isn't as important as trying your level best to keep the cabin level.

That was very level-headed thinking, Julie

This discussion in plumb crazy. It has gone off in a perpendicular direction, but that could be a good thing as some posters could have gone off on a tangent.

But you know I think Wilbour is really onto something here. The human eye is capable of seeing millions of different shades of colors, and so is able to discriminate the very slight difference in hue and contrast of dirty dish water that is only slightly deeper on one side than the other. This could be used to make extremely accurate levels for such important tasks as ensuring that garbage can platforms are perfectly level.

So, I'm considering designing and marketing such a device and I'm looking for investors. But first, I have to come up with the best dirty dish water formula for the new 'Dirty Dishwater Precise Level'. What was in your dirty dish water Wilbour? Last weeks BBQ sauce that was dried up on the plates? Coffee grounds? Dinty Moore chili beans? I need to know the exact proportions of each ingredient.

when my Trailer 24 x 48 (2) pieces, was put in place The installer used clear hoses & light green colored water to see how to get it level, he said it was the Best way to get it done.
