I was pricing pipe and parts to drive a well at my shed. They had 1 1/4" x 10' SCH 40 galvinized pipe for $18. They had 60" well drive pipe for $17.
When you add the cost of drive couplers to the 5' pipe its more than twice the price for 10'.
Is there a difference between the two types of pipe. I'm starting with augered hole over ten feet deep and would like to start with the cheaper 10' length of pipe. Is the drive pipe something special?

There is no difference in the pipe itself other than the length. Go ahead and save some money.

Were will you stand to drive the 10footer in the ground????
I always buy 5 footers . don't forget to buy a sacrificial union for the end you are driving to protect the threads , and my advice RENT A POST DRIVER ..A SLEDGE IS HARD TO DO

I have augered a 15 foot hole first, so the 10 footer and the well point will drop all the way to ground level.
I have a friends very heavy driver.

YOU ARE CORRECT, I MISSED THAT USE A 10 FIRST . We put one in 18 feet last week it was no good, try again I guess in a different spot . It's not a science its a art .

Just, try the services of a water witch. It is really quite amazing and after witnessing this service and seeing the results, I am very impressed. They use a piece of sapling with a "y", hold on to the two ends and it points to the water underground. Very cool!
I have used a sand point for years, but even the good ones rust after awhile and it makes the water rusty. If they strike a rock, they can tear the screening. If a hole is augered, then drop a plastic ( abs) pipe down the hole with a stainless steel footvalve and small screen.
