I built a plywood based Murphy bed for my cabin, queen bed size. It was too narrow for my wife and I plus the dog half the time. So I widened it to king width, ditched the mattress and got 4 inch foam plus an inch of memory foam on top of that. Works OK. Then I cut the whole thing shorter to 6' for more walking room around it since we never swing it up to the wall. So it's about 6'x6', far from any standard size.
My old bones don't sleep on it as well as I do at home and would like to try something else. Maybe it's the lack of a box spring? I could maybe cut a regular king mattress shorter with sawsall, hmm. Anyway, just curious if any of you have dealt with unusual mattress needs.

I just did a quick search and there seem to be a number of custom mattress makers out there. Who knew?
Maybe you could find one in your area. Here are a couple of examples: Portland, Rocky Mountain.
I have no idea on price, but getting a good night's sleep is worth throwing a bit of money at.

Have you looked into an Air Mattress?? They are odd sizes and I love mine. Deflate it in the morning, store it away. 2 to 3 mins at night and it's inflated.

buy some egg crate foam and put it on top of your mattress. It will help remove pressure points. We use it on our mattress and it went from horrible to great!

I put 3" of memory foam on top of a terrible mattress. Made a real difference. Slept better. No sore knees in the a.m. Etc.

Check with RV suppliers. RV's always have odd size mattresses.

I have really odd sized benches/beds for the cabin and I found this company to be pretty great.

I second the air mattress suggestion. Had an expensive Coleman one that was good. Then I bought a cheapie twin one at W@$%&World for like 12 bucks. It is very comfy. Istonis is the brand, or something like it....It's blue lol

Froli springs have become quite popular for use where box springs can't be used like on boats, rvs & residences with wall beds, so you might look into them:

Since it's a modular system, you could easily adapt the configuration to your non-standard sized murphy base & it just might give you that extra adaptive support you're looking for.

Wow, I had no idea anyone replied to this thread! I'm subscribed and never got an email. Anyway some great ideas. I keep passing the air beds at Costco and wondering...like the idea of something lightweight and easy to move, but are they comfy and supportive enough? Also the froli springs and RV stuff looks interesting too. Thanks for getting me back (no pun) to thinking about this!

We've found air mattresses to be reasonably comfortable. They can be cold, however. If the temperature around you is low, put something insulating between you and the mattress.

Mmmm, slept on my new mattress Saturday night. Full on Eastern King Serta Perfect Sleeper 12" extra firm. I don't care if I have to somersault over it, best night of sleep I've had in the cabin, maybe even at home. Wife wasn't elbowing me, dog wasn't chewing on my leg.
Anyway, the cut up foam mattress I was using got moldy over the winter, even though we were out there once a week. Couldn't see anything but you could sure smell it. So I'm in the market for some kind of mattress cover for the new one. Thinking something plastic with a zipper that encases the whole mattress. Or wrap it in visqueen.

I second, Hatties suggestion of egg crate foam. Our trailer mattress was too hard. We put an egg crate over it.Still not to my liking. We added a second egg crate over the first. Like sleeping on a cloud. I was needing hip replacement , at the time. pressure points were not fun. We still have it on there , very close to the good mattress we have at home. We all need a good comfortable , nights sleep.old243

Something I just learned that you probably already know:
I put a plastic sheet over my new mattresses to try and keep it cleaner. Felt clammy sleeping on it, started thinking about mattress breathability. Turns out it's important, especially underneath and with foam mattresses. My base is plywood, probably why my old mattress got moldy. Slats is the recommended answer.
