I finally installed an aerator for our pond. It works. I bought it off an ebay company and the cost was around $600.00. Now that I know what the components are I could have done it for less, but that's the story of my life. We ran it for about a week while I was building the support mechanism. We all agree here that the pond looks better already. Less stagnant. I need to put more weights on the hose to keep it under water. Anyone interested in doing one let me know. Now my next step is to get rid of at least half the cattails that spread this summer.

Yep, Just. I'm going to leave about half of the cat tails for the wildlife. I was talking to someone a few days ago who said cattail roots are good to eat. Full of nutrition and taste like potatoes.

I mow my cat tails. takes 'em a season to come back. and if you keep mowing they give up. grass moves in.

i've been meaning to try eating the roots. and have collected dry cobs in winter and used 'em for mixing with mortar and chinking and what not.

didn't realize the stems with the gooey part could be used as a painkiller and antiseptic. I have a cut on my finger right now. gonna go try it.

and. er. don't forget. Glyphosate. The roundup etc chemical. Is proven to be exceptionally hazardous to pregnant women. I would keep it away from kids etc. Also its broad range toxin. So it kills frogs, damsel flies etc. I wouldn't use it.

I was going to start just chopping them down. Then I read that too much organic matter decomposing in a pond that wasn't spring fed or aerated would deplete the O2 and kill the aquatic life.

All I know is that my wife wanted a pool and we finally put one in at our home. I have always razzed her about all the money and equipment she needs to spend for it. I call it the big hole that we throw money into.

But now that I have to do all this stuff for the pond by our cabin it's her turn. I thought after it was dug I was done. Not the case at all.

You can push the reeds over with your feet too.

Ya. Don't leave 'em in the pond. Pull the mass up and out and away from the pond. The local nursery pulls them out and then drags 'em off to the compost pile. They have hired staff tho.

Still. Nice afternoon of work at the camp!

Or is cottage. Or Cabin. Dang I forget.
