I don't know anything about this generator but harbor freight has a predator that is supposed to rival a Honda. Right now the price is 429 vs 949. If anyone is interested in taking a look check out harbor freight. They have a comparison chart with the Honda.

I have a sneaky feeling that it won't have a large fan club on this forum.

Yea Salty , you are probably right but I thought I would put it out there all the same. I am usually one to say you get what you pay for. Stats look good on paper but that don't mean crap.

I would take a chance on this generator, however, I have two Honda's. I love the Honda's, but rarely use them. I believe a cheap generator stored is as good as a costly generator stored.

All that being said, my dad has a piece of crap Chinese generator that we have used for years without problem. Its anybodies guess rather it's good or not. The reputable brands are great because of their consistency.

I have one of those. Only had to fix the starter rope and replace the kill switch. Picture below.

I also got one of the 2 stroke HF generators. Paid about $80 bucks for it. Just to have a small one to drag around. Its only rated at 800 watts, but it will power a 13 amp circular saw without a problem. I've ran an air compressor, pole saws, hedge trimmer etc. I thought I would blow it up while it was still under warranty. Its still kickin, starts easy and its very portable.

I know discussing these POS Chinese generators this time of year is guaranted to generate (sorry) arguments, but I gotta echo darz5150--I got one of those $80 smokers (mine was labeled Sportsman, but it's the same one) six or seven years ago and it's still clanging and knocking just fine.

I happened to have it at my house when a storm knocked electricity out for three days. (My good generator, of course, was at the cabin at the time). It ran non-stop and powered the refrigerator, TV and wifi the whole time. And the best thing about it is I don't fret as much about someone walking off with it.

We have two Hondas, one from the 70s and one from the 90s. they are loud unlike the new models but that are reliable and can be found cheap.

I have a Honda 3000 inverter generator that I love and has been awesome. This summer my father in law asked me if I wanted an old Honda 2800 watt generator as a back up. I said of course....it had been sitting in his shop and not fired up for over ten years. We filled it up and two pulls and away it went. It's loud but how much more can you ask for reliability.

Not sure about the generators, but not sure why HF has such a bad rep. I bought all my power tools from them and probably saved close to half the price of name brands. I've abused them left them out in rain and dust storms and they're all still running great after building two thirds of my cabin.

Like anything, it will work perfect right up until the time it quits. When will that be? Probably when you need it the most.

In reality, my generators spend most of the time stored, its that smidgen when its not stored that is critical for me. Be it a power outage or at my cabin.

I am 56 yrs old, a professional auto dealer technicians by trade, type A ultra picky. I have done this mechanical stuff my entire working career basically. And I have had my share of cheaper tools early in my career. In the end, I found the more expensive stuff is cheaper in the long run almost 100% of the time. And the more expensive stuff always much nicer to use.

Parts and support network is critical. I can fix anything with parts. Without parts, its scrap metal.

I never look at price anymore. I look at quality. Now that doesn't mean I wont try to get the best price on my quality generator etc.

Wise words Toyota. Couldn't agree more. Low prices are tempting and for one off jobs I still use those tools. But if I want it to last. Quality is the way to go

Toyota I agree with you. I'll take quality over price as well.

My reason is this: we are remote on a island in Canada. If our water pump, generator or on demand hot water shower stop working we are going to be in big trouble.
We have a backup water pump and we are getting a back up generator and on demand hot water shower.
The originals can be repaired if need be but that could take weeks and I'm not going without a few modern conveniences at my cabin.

It would be helpful if you could recommend some brand names of items most of us use at the cabin. I am not at all mechanically inclined but I am learning to be so out of necessity.
