I don't kill them, but am aware of their danger to humans and animals. Would not hesitate to take one out if at all threatened, even a little bit.

They are aggressive out here, have taken little dogs off a leash when being walked, large packs lure domestic dogs away and kill them...humans have been attacked and killed. They need to be treated as what they are, wild predators......
Although I agree with GaryO (as usual) and love the sound of them at night and in the morning. It sounds like the Wild West, which is where we are...so it's fitting.

But make no mistake, these can/will kill or injure you and your animals in a split second, they are not cute lovable animals.....

Most coyotes no longer fear man.
Back when I worked for a living, I’d be the one to open up the shop.
One morning, about 4:30A, I drove in to the parking lot.
Two ‘yotes loped across the tarmac in front of me.
I got outa my Jeep, stared at ‘em, clapped my hands, thinking they’d hightail it.
They jus’ looked at each other with quizzical looks, like ‘what’re we s’pose to do, run?’
Then looked back at me, (I think I saw them shrug) then sauntered off, t’ward the Western Family warehouse next door.
Prolly their early morning route.

Got any links about that? It's very rare for wolves to kill a human and they are bigger than coyotes.

Some of the problems with nailing down Coyote behavior is that they've bred over the years with dogs and wolves. There are so many hybrids out there. The other complication is environment. It's tough to scare a coyote in an urban setting because of his conditioning to noise, cars, people etc. I think the only death from a Coyote was in the East a few years ago to a female hiker if my memory is correct.

There have been a couple of deaths.....although true that is not common, my point was that they are dangerous and could be deadly....

A Cal State Poly study:

To date, we have compiled 165 coyote attacks
on humans in California from calendar years 1977 through 2015.

We compiled reports of 141 coyote attacks in 25
additional states, and 61 attacks in 7 Canadian
provinces. These attacks outside California
resulted in injuries to 131 adults and 75 children.

In ≥60 instances in California where a child was attacked by a coyote, the victim would presumably have been more seriously injured or killed had an adult not intervened to interrupt the attack.

Of the 367 coyote attacks on humans within the
United States and Canada, 2 attacks resulted in
fatalities: a 3-year-old girl was killed in Glendale,
California, in August 1981 (Howell 1982); and a
19-year-old woman was killed on a hiking trail
in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Nova
Scotia, in late October 2009 (Aulakh 2009).

A good idea....I did a dumb thing a few years back..after having had our desert place for only a short time (so not that aware of coyotes), we hiked over to a neighbors place after dark to have a few drinks.....on the way back home (staggering a bit), I came around a bend only to see about 6-7 pairs of beady eyes staring at us..I think I scared them too...made myself big and waved flashlight, threw rocks and hightailed it the few hundred yards left to our place.
They left us alone - that time. Coulda been bad.

I had no idea they were that aggressive. Dogs kill several dozen people (mostly kids) every year so I guess coyotes would be capable of it too.

They are just showing up here in Alaska. However, we still have wolves which tend to keep a lid on coyote populations. The only fatal wolf attack I can remember was about 10 years ago in Chignik Lake. A women was out running alone and apparently was attacked and killed by several wolves. She was fairly small though, less than 5ft tall if I remember right.

It seems to be worse down here in So Cal, maybe the more benign weather? We have lots of 'em and they are a problem, we all keep our heads on a swivel and a gun nearby. And they keep getting bigger, 50 lbs is not uncommon...

One does not worry me, yet, but a pack sure does, even with our bigger dogs I don't think they would mess with our dogs, ( a 65 and 75 lb brother/sister Dobie/Heeler mix), but I don't want them getting in a fight and ending up at the vets,

I don't know if a 75 lb part doberman could take a coyote....? Because the coyote is a wild animal?

We don't have too many coyotes in our area. They stick to the city. Once you get out of town, the wolves tend to hunt them out, and we have thousands of wolves.

Here is some food for thought on this delicate subject. I do try and "think like a mountain."

Young guys beat coyote to death on film - Alberta Outdoorsmen Forum

http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=354808

Alberta RCMP investigate 'disturbing' video of coyote slowly beaten to death | CBC News
Excerpt:

"Very disturbing," he said. "That's some very sociopathic behaviour. It's blatantly criminal."

The man said he doesn't know the boys personally but felt compelled to report them. He said he hopes they are held accountable and "get some help."

"I mean, just look at how disturbing that video is, especially when the coyote is sitting there with fear in its face and they zoom in on it and laugh.

"It's just heart-wrenching and disturbing on two ends of the spectrum.

"No sane human would accept that."

I wont even watch it. It will be an image that I wont be able to get rid off. I will not visit that link.

There is only several good reasons to kill an animal, a legal hunt by the rules, self defense and a few other rare reasons for "management" of a population or disease.

Big coyote news around my neighborhood lately. My house in the suburbs that is, not my cabin. Two Chihuahuas were attacked and killed last week. Both were on leashes with their owners, at the park right down the street where I walk my dog (the little wimp fuzz ball pictured above).

So I'm a little paranoid, I often walk him in the early hours, still dark out. I'm reading to take along a flashlight, horn, whistle, baseball bat, golf club, pepper spray.. What do you recommend?

Good idea, thanks Bo. I've heard they attack super fast. I got one of those little air powered horns. Maybe that would scare one away before it gets close enough to spray it.

Yeah. It’s like most hunting issues. There’s the skilled and professional-like hunters that don’t cause suffering and then there’s the amateurish, sloppy, stupid, psycho and just cruel animal killers that give hunting a bad name.

Same goes for animal breeders, ranchers, corporate farms, etc. There’s the good and then there’s the downright sick, uncaring and evil.

I like to think that our pioneering forefathers had a lot of respect and empathy towards the animals they raised and killed in order to survive themselves. Thus maybe misguided wishful thinking on my part though.
