My wife, son and I purchased 18 acres in beautiful Homer, Alaska and will be building starting late next month. We keep going back and forth between a square cabin and a rectangular cabin, 16x16, 16x24. Curious what the most economical size would be? Thinking 16x16 may be a bit to small, would like to keep the square as we want to do a shed/skillion roof. Thanks for any input!

In my opinion, it's easier to layout the interior of a retangular shape. Full width in front for living area. Rear can be divided into sleeping quarters and restroom. Of course any shape will work. There's folks who go round.

Hi Omiles,

It's probably best to look at example floor plans of log cabins to see if you prefer a square of rectangle. In terms of sizes I would suggest either a Rectangle at 12x32 or a Square cabin at 20 x 20.

Both offer good spaces for a single bedroom, bathroom and then an open kitchen/dining/lounge area.

If you haven't seen log cabin plans, take a look, they have lots of free floorpans and designs you can use and take inspiration from!

Hope this helps!

Economy also depends on not wasting money on lumber cutoffs etc. Doing things in 4-foot increments works pretty well to optimize things like plywood and 2x lumber. The minimum amount of lumber used per square foot would be a square; a 14x14 vs 12x16 is only four square feet different, but you will have more cutoff (potentially wasted) material on the 14x14 compared to the 12x16.
