Hello all, I've tried searching old posts with no luck. Is anyone aware of any Ontario Building Code specifications that are NOT permitted in the Bancroft area? My family is looking for a waterfront property and would like to build a cabin with hydro, separate privy, and leaching pit for a single lake-supplied pressurized fixture.I am aware of size regulations etc. for the cabin and the Ontario Code, just don't want to go in uniformed for rules specific to this municipality.
If anyone can shed any light on building a seasonal cabin in this area, that would be of great help.

Im down by Apsley...Chandos Lake area
I do know that they have made changes in regards to waterfront properties and dealing with blackwater....so just check what if anything has changed in that regard to your area
Otherwise building code is standard

Some new regs came down the pipe this spring across Ontario and more coming with a few Biggies next spring. Best option is to check with the county/municipality building dept.
Couple of things to ask about. Are Hunt Camps or Recreational Camps allowed ? (not so much near big cities  )
Compost Toilets & Grey Water systems are generally accepted in Ontario BUT some regions will insist on a commercial solution as opposed to anything self-built... This is generally because of a lack of knowledge, so they just default to NO... patience is needed with those folks.
Last Point to save you much Brain Pain... do NOT trust what the real estate agent says you can / can't do. 95% of the time, they are clueless BUT there are some agents who do know their stuff when it comes to such properties but they are far & few between.... Usually if they are Cabin - Homesteaders they know. If your agent does not understand what these things are handled in their area, then the blind is leading you down the path. Sorry, it's not polite BUT it is true nevertheless.
EDIT: Ohh I forgot to mention...
I'm "sociable" with our Building Inspector and he shakes his head looking at what's coming and says ... "this is gonna be a pain" (edited for niceness) He chuckled a bit and said those who get the permits on the old codes will be grandfathered in but they aren't supposed to tell anyone that, apparently. Something to keep in mind !
Lastly the Water front issue... Should have mentioned that first... after this springs mass flooding & related problems (which are getting worse) some new unpleasantness has come down the pipe... Insurance will be tougher to get & will cost more, the Province will not help non-primary-residences any more, so cottages & secondary properties get no love anymore. Insurance Companies will give you insurance but without flood coverage or pending on area and natural event insurance (fire zones etc...). Sadly this just came out recently, so if you own your home and this will be secondary, check with your current insurance Co. and it may be prudent to shop that around a bit and get more details.

I find the bylaws painful to read in general. Still not sure of the minimum size required in Haliburton.
And I agree with Steve_S. We have had some agents tell us stuff that was completely inaccurate.

Realtor = Polyester clad used car salesman pushing that low mileage car from the Little Old Lady in Pasadena ! It comes down to commissions and they really care nothing for the crumbs of a 10,000-50,000 property sale.
BTW: If your furtling around the countryside looking at properties, don't get discouraged if you find something that is For Sale by Owner - some darn good deals to be found that way if you don't limit yourself.

It says that generally speaking the minimum is 600 sqft, but i didn't bother reading further to see what the specifics are that dictate that size

Give the Building inspector a call. Try in the morning as that is when he is in office. I found Dale very easy to deal with and knows his stuff. Will help you with interpretation of the code.

The Chief Building Official is very reasonable and will do his best to guide you though the process. His name is Frank Mills. I hear he may be retiring soon, so you may want to reach out as there is a very real risk that the next individual will not be as gracious.
