Hey all,
I've got a 10X12 in the rainy mountains of Washington state with a corrugated metal roof on it. I believe the roof has been there since the place was built in 1994 (I bought it in 2013). There's a decent amount of surface rust, I know I have leaks in at least two spots, and the roof was definitely installed by a novice in a rush. Imagine panels that are simply bent around corners and over a dormer ridge.
My instinct is to remove the old metal and install a new steel roof. Not only is the existing metal in very poor condition, it's not flush in many areas and would be difficult to cover with new panels as I have seen others do.
At this point, I'm fairly certain that beneath the panels is bare plywood, with no gap or vapor barrier. Assuming this plywood is still in good condition, what's the best way to replace the roof panels? Vapor barrier on the plywood and then new panels? Furring strips attached through the plywood to the trusses and then panels onto the strips? I've seen so many variations of these installations that it makes my head spin. Just trying to figure out whether to screw in the plains or the ridges of panels is enough to drive someone crazy. Any tips or advice would be extremely welcome. For what it's worth, I do get a decent amount of snow and rain but not too much wind.

Roof do not have vapor barriers. They do have a weather resistant barrier, either building felt (tar paper) or a synthetic underlayment available under many names. The best ones have a slightly rough upper surface that provides some boot grip.
Rip off the old steel and check the soundness of the sheathing. Replace any rotted or delaminated material. Then install underlayment and then new roofing panels. Commonly available panels use screws in the flats, with a rubber grommeted washer. Never overtighten. There are now screws with cupped washers that make overtightening the screws pretty much impossible.

I would do what ICC said but would install(screw) a 1 x 4 every 20 inches or so(into the roof rafters) and screw the roof on. I think it provides ventilation to keep the roof cooler in the summer.

Strap the roof with 1x4 and attach the roofing to that. Screw through what your calling the plain. The only reason I can think of for screwing through the rib, would be where the panels overlap and you want to stitch the panel together. The screws typically used for this are called stitching screws, are quite a bit smaller in length and diameter and usually have a self tapping drill point on them.
