We got the North side of the main roof insulated and roofed. This was really tough work, the angle of the sun was such that the sun was reflecting up off the foil faced insulation and back at us. It was like working in a solar oven. We could do about 15 minutes of work before needing a break.

Mostly time lapse video of how we are insulating and roofing. https://youtu.be/viabiXnrcjs

I just watched your roof insulation video. It was very informative! We'll be eventually building a timber frame cabin, and I was curious about this step.
Great job on the pictures and videos!

Thanks Whiskey Jack, glad it helped you. I have one more tip, that I forgot to mention. I'd add a half inch or so to my screw length. My screws were 8 inches, and in theory they needed to go through 6.75 inches of material, but everything doesn't lie perfectly flat, so another half inch of screw length would have helped torque everything down. I kinda had to treat the screws like a tire nut, and torque them all bit by bit or risk stripping out the wood. It did eventually work out where everything got real solid, but longer screws would have meant I didn't need to be so careful. Good luck with your build and we'd love to follow along once you get started.

Here's our current project, a 108 square foot bunkie/guest house. This is our first time building anything outside of a deck, so it's been a good learning experience. Hopefully it will be fully completed by August, one year from the start date.

I took my 9 year old nephew to the cabin because he was really interested in helping. We had a great time. I don't have any kids of my own. I don't know how you parents get anything done! As much as he wanted to help, there wasn't much I was comfortable letting him do, so he ended up getting really bored about an hour after we got there... We made a short video together. About half way through the video is when he started getting bored and barraged me with a stream of questions that is still floating somewhere over Lake Erie.

Did a bit more roofing yesterday. Really trying to get it dried in before this deer season. Probably going to order windows this week. I still have to do the back side of that little roof, finish up some sheathing and flashing and then house wrap it.

Made a bit more progress on the cabin, shot another video. We're picking up our doors and windows soon, excited to see them. Next trip I'll work on filling in missing pieces of sheathing and hopefully start on house wrap.

We got our doors and windows in. Excited, didn't think we'd ever get this far. I'm excited to be able to make winter trips, build a fire in the wood stove and get snowed in.

Got a bit more building done, not almost dried in except for this bit in the picture... Also got some solar stuff in the mail today. Almost have everything I need to complete my install. Made another video chronicling the latest progress.

Looks like I have a few videos to catch up on! Are you making it out there during the winter at all?

Yea I have been getting out there pretty regularly, trying to keep the project moving forward. I've done a number on my road. I used to just go out there when it's dry, lately I've been going any condition.

I've been working on Drywall and finishing out the bedroom so I have a clean warm place to stay during my work trips. It's nice to keep one room clutter free and almost livable... I also made the window casing for the bedroom. I'll install that in the next video that I'm currently editing for next week.

How does heat circulate through the cabin and into the bedroom?

Well, right now it really doesn't since I don't have a heat source in the main cabin, only in the bedroom so far. But eventually the plan is to just keep the door open most of the time. We plan to use a wood stove as the main heat source. We have a small propane heater in the bedroom that is thermostat controlled, the plan is for that to kick on if the wood stove burns out in the wee hours of the morning.

I made some flooring from rough Ash and got it installed and also did some other odd's and ends. Pretty soon we'll transition to outside work, looking forward to that.

Very nice build Mike. I found your videos on youtube that lead me to this site.

We are planing on building our own cabin in the next few years. A month ago we closed on a piece of property. We are now waiting on the weather to break to get the culvert pipe in to start the driveway.

We are also going to be making our own Ash for flooring. I cut my beatle killed ash this past winter and am milling them now. I plan on useing a ship lap joint.

Do you know the moisture content of the ash? Did you let it stabilize in the cabin? Can you keep us updated on the gap?

Hi Brett, this site is great isn't it? Congrats on your new property.

After that video my Dad told me he used a ship lap joint on all the wide plank pine flooring he did in our house growing up. At the same time a couple commenters mentioned that the tongue plays an important role in keeping the floor flat... So who knows.

I don't know the moisture content it was kiln dried at Ohio Outdoor Living Group (the place I get most of the wood). I didn't let it acclimate, I figured a bit of expansion that I am expecting will help tighten some of the joints. The cabin isn't climate controlled so it's definitely going to be doing a lot of movement over its lifetime. As long as it doesn't buckle, I'm ok with seasonal gaps...
