Hey,
I'm a long time lurker. First time poster.
My wife and I own a small commercial woodlot (123 acres). We recently built a small bunkie on it to conduct our forest management and also do some hunting.
I looked at a lot of small cabins on this forum before building one. I now want to pay it forward by posting some shots of our bunkie and cabin build.

Looks great!
Can you tell us about the interior wall finish? Is that T&G you milled yourself and then stained? What is the stain?
I like the log rafters on the porch, too!

Walls are T&G white pine i bought. The finish is white wash and varnish clear coat. The ceiling is T&G cedar, unfinished.
The cabin porch underside is cedar recycled from a hydro pole. rafters were milled flat.
I plan on making my own siding on the mill for sure.

Here's the first deer my wife took from the property. Nice 10 point 4.5 year old whitetail. He scored 143-in B&C net (unofficially)

Don't I know it! Arrow went clean through. That's the exit wound. Double lunged him. She caught a black bear last year!
Also, she was hunting alone. She took the Thanksgiving week off to hunt the big 10 pointer we had caught on camera. I was back home in Ottawa with the kids.
She had to winch him out of a gully with the ATV. Hang him on the tractor, field dress, skin, quarter, and bring to the butcher all on her own! Her dad helped with the tractoring (He doesn't have the stomach for the dirty work). She had never field dressed before. She prepared by watching a few youtube videos. So now, she's also good with knives!

I just need to ask if it was with a compound bow or traditional archery like a recurve bow?
Im hunting this year with a recurve bow up near apsley on our 100 acre lot, but didn't manage to get a doe tag, so Buck only

We do traditional archery for small game and target. We don't feel confident enough to take deer with a traditional recurve yet. She shot this buck with an Excalibur crossbow at about 35 yards (fast but noisy).
I've seen some big bucks come out of the Kawarthas. Good Luck!
Seems like there are a lot of off-grid cabin dwellers in Ontario!

I love your walls. I'm in Ontario too. I'm looking to source some T&G pine for my walls just like yours. I don't really want to get them from a big box store. Did you get yours from a mill?
Also, I've seen whitewashed pine that can come out a bit pinkish. I read a recommendation that you should get your whitewash tinted with a bit of grey to counter act this. Did you use any particular brand/tint?

Yes a local (cash deal) for a full skid he had in a style he no longer carries. I stay away from the big box stores as much as possible.
I think it was Minwax in sun bleached white. It looked white in the store but came out grey. We like it.
The stain in the main cabin came out peachy (also Minwax). I don't like it as much.

@Kel and others in region.... Shaw Lumber in Pembroke - excellent prices & quality products, everything sawn, kiln dried, and processed right there BUT they only deal in Red & White Pine. They provided my 5/8 x 6" T&G for all my ceilings.
Cedar is also available in the neighbourhood and more common too, many local mills and one man band operations... Got all my live edge cedar etc from a private mill near Golden Lake... quite a LOT of board feet and very well priced. My rough cut pine came from another private family mill (been operating 120 yrs) near Renfrew, he also does hardwoods and poplar etc, can finish mill and fully dress but air dry only.
I dunno if it's appropriate to post phone numbers so I won't just in case, we can figure something out if need be...
There are quite a few "Local Boys" cutting and milling around here... a few really big operations in Killaloe but I can't remember the names but visible from road side, they also have kilns for drying.

I have a mill but i also have a 200 year old sugar maple that fell over in a wind storm. The trunk is about 4 feet wide! my mill can only handle 30 inches. I'm looking for someone to custom mill some 2 inch thick live edge slabs to make a couple of tables and counter tops for the cabins. The counter tops I have now are temporary.
If you know of someone near Killaloe that'd be great!

Transporting it ? most likely your going to have to take it somewhere but maybe check in Kijiji and see if there is a local portable mill that could handle it and come out. But I'm not sure if a band saw mill would give the result you'd want, I don't know what those can / can't do, just that my cedar guy does all sorts of things with it but that's cedar, not maple ! and never that big, that's for sure. LOL

I had a fellow show me, live edge 4 inch thick maple he had slabbed, live edge, Some of them would be 4 feet, 10 feet long. He used a chain saw mill , with a very long bar. Not in your area but might be a possibility. He wanted me to kiln them. They are better air dried, slow , might reduce checking. He was going to make tables.
Another way to split a big log, google, using black powder, another using a hydraulic jack. Good luck with your project old243

RL, Go to the Woodweb site, look at splitting big logs, they describe various ways to split. Use black powder. Then you can get them on your mill. Sounds like fun. old 243

I may use what I have and trim three sides of the log (top bottom back) and be left with a block that is 25 to 30 inches to take 2 in ch slabs for counter tops and forget about the table double live or bookend two pieces for the table instead.

We're in Brudenell about 15 minutes north of you! There is still four days of bow hunting! I've stopped for the season. Our freezer is full with a buck and bear.
I'm still baiting to survey what survived the gun season.
