I found this video of a wood stove heating and circulating hot water by natural convection. I was always curious if this would work - no pumps needed. He put together a prototype to prove the concept. One could run insulated pipe to the rear of a cabin and heat a bedroom. I think if I did this I would use connectors so I could change parts such as twice as many coils around the stove pipe. One improvement I would make is an insulating cover around the coil and insulating all the hot side delivery pipe. Has anyone ever seen a complete engineering guide to wood stove hot water heating?

I've thought about it and love the idea, but the thought of an air lock and an overpressure explosion of hot steam has always made me think its not worth it. I'm sure with a proper setup and safety features it can be done safely but worth thinking through and putting in proper protection.

You described our first off grid, on demand water heater. Except ours was voice activated.
My wife would say, " Hey, we need some hot water!"

Note paper makes a great fire starter too. Probably why the gf rarely comes out to the camp. Hmmm.
I gather snow. Put it on the woodstove. And always have hot water ready. Great when you come in from the cold with frozen fingers.
I have looked yearningly at some of those woodstove water boilers. But the pot wins out. Easy to fill. Already own it.

I think Dave is more interested in the concept of using the heated water to heat a room rather than making hot water for tea.
Usually the amount of heat from a hot water connection to a wood stove isn't sufficient to heat an entire room. A better bet would be using one of the new low emissions outdoor wood fired boilers. This will allow you to heat multiple buildings and also have separate piping for showers, sinks, cooking and cleaning.

we also use the pot on stove method, added benefit is adding humidity to the cabin makes it feel warmer.

I have a Waterford cook stove that has the water box built in and the piping runs upstairs to the hot water tank. There is also 2 solar heater panels outside ground mounted each is 4x8 which also feeds into a preheater tank. I haven't used the system yet as everything is written in German and I'm changing the location of the wood stove. I did read that its not a good idea to use the stove if there's no water in the tank inside the fire box as a very hot fire can cause damage to the welds....
