I need some advice from the electrical gurus. I have a small hunting cabin in the mountain with everything I need other than power. I don't need much power, just enough to run lights at night. I've tried solar and not enough sun gets into the valley for my cheap panels to recharge my deep cell batteries so I have thought up an idea and want to run it by some higher intellect. I know I can fabricate the mechanisms but I don't know if it would be physically possible. I'm thinking of using an alternator to keep my batteries charged and turning the alternator by using a small water wheel with well greased bearings. The trick is, I want to use a water pump, pulling water from and dispersing it back into a holding tank recycling the water. I would use the batteries to run the pump, hoping to use less power running the pump than the water wheel would create therefore charging my batteries. Is it possible? Could I play with gear ratios and the thought of adding a belt like in a car to get greater RMP's for the alternator? What do you guys think?

If I understand correctly you're describing a perpetual motion machine. It won't work.

No such thing as free energy

No way. Energy into such a system is going to be greater than the energy that goes out. Losses occur in any gear train, any electric motors, and any pump. Always. It is physics. May as well try to make gold from lead.

Skip the water wheel, pump and ponds. Get an electric motor, power it off the alternator, and have the motor spin the alternator.
