Thanks, Hattie! That is an actual Jeep poster I got a couple of years ago. Since I own two jeeps, it was a perfect fit! LOL . . .

Anyone got pics of open air crappers? Im pretty sure that the route i plan to take after getting some sunrise inspiration from the latrine at a spectacular AT shelter a while back. Sunrise views from the seat and a stiff 30 degree breeze, it gets no better!!!

Here are a couple of pics of the open air outhouse from the saddle below the Grand Teton in Wyoming..."greatest view in Idaho." The first time I went up there it didn't have any walls.

Two votes for Spence's request for open air outhouses. I am working on plans for one now and hope to start construction prior to end Nov. I am thinking of a 4x4 section with half walls and a roof with a 4x4 section in front with a half wall on the front on that section. Will construct with PT for most part however will use cedar shingles on half walls to match rest of the shacks on the property. Steel roof over the working part of the structure. Am thinking along lines of humancompost toilet idea and am thinking that a roof water collection, gravity fed hand washing station. Thoughts, suggestions, ideas ...

Hello again everyone! It was a nice 72 degree autumn week-end here in Oklahoma, so I took the opportunity to build a privy for my lake cabin. I checked out some the photos on this forum before I started, scratched out some measurements, and started hammering. I think it will work out fine. I still have to add the door.

Construction to date on my open air throne. Next spring will see a metal roof and construction on humancompost boxes and a few other little amenities

Amish built log out house

I had fun with this outhouse. Hauled it on a flat bed through down town Chicago. Lots of city people looking at me , trying to figure out what I was doing. I installed hickory hard wood flooring and deer antler toilet paper holder.

Omg Brent Stevens . . . how ADORABLE is THAT????? If I'm not mistaken that sign may have been made here in Montana . . www.oldwoodsigns.com. . .they sell through various outlets and online but are made here in my hometown. Love your outhouse design!!!

Montana girl. You are right. My wife ordered it on line from some place in Montana. Fun to see where they go. I live this sign. After a long trip to the cabin it's the outhouse that welcomes us first

Ours is a bit different, this is a four holer shared by a half dozen cabins. There's even a sink (only until the pipes are drained for the winter, of course) and when I was a kid there was even a cold water shower (before everybody added showers to their cabins). The locals call it "Old Splinterbutt" after the wooden seats.

Some how I totally missed this section. Here is my composting out house build from the plans in Cottage Life. It needs a paint job in the spring. The boys love the Dutch Door and having it open while they are having a call to nature. Enjoy Sarg68

We have a very primitive toilet setup for now. there ground is very hard so very hard to dig a hole, and I'm sure hole toilets are not allowed anyways, we built a wooden toilet and I dug a small hole and placed it on top the hole. put up a tarped canopy to stay dry. I had also wrapped the sides with a tarp for privacy.
this has been this way for 4 summers now, this summer will have to see a new setup as the hole is almost full. yuck. lol.

This is my throne room. Fall 2013 I "four seasoned" it. Now it has a propane heater. And hot shower for 3 season use.

Here it is at minus 35 outside, 12 degrees C inside (-30, 50 F roughly).

Now that I have the heater I do kinda miss the -20 mornings contemplating the snow filled fields.

Ok, so first order of business was to rebuild the outhouse. The roof and frame were ok but the walls were scraps of plywood. Previous owner left lots of reclaimed clapboards and wood scraps to I now have a green sided outhouse. My wife is insisting on a door so that is next. She did agree to just a half door though. Since my water table is so high we have decided to use this as a dry outhouse and use a Luggable Loo for now until I pick up a Pora-Potti. We have the luxury of a town maintained outhouse near the local beach 5 mins drive away so the guys are encouraged to use that one for the nasties.

I would put a dutch door in and keep it closed when nobody is using the outhouse. I don't even want to think about the flies etc.. if there is not a full door. Yuck!

This is our outhouse, the exterior matches our small cabin in central Wi. That would be the Wicked Witch of the East's leg sticking out.

"Le Peter Potter" - the name we gave our outhouse based on our then 5 year old's interpretation of a Porta Potty. Photo is from 2010 - since added a name plaque on the front.

Well got my throne just about complete this year - biggest challenge was getting the walkway done. It's a classic! Nothing like an open air experience! Using composting toilet - sawdust - and works like a charm. No odour, no flies - exceeding my expectations! Last part of this project will be to hook up a small roof water collection system with sink.
