A few forums I frequent have a marketplace for folks selling stuff related to the forum interest. And some of them a straight up flea market. Thinking that would be cool on here. Might attract some spammers but seems like a lot of names are recognized on here.
Just a thought.
Guessing I should have placed this in "off topic". Apologies mod. Feel free to move if not too inconvenient.

My thoughts on that are that the users here are too far spread out to make a marketplace practical. Shipping is often a deal killer. I prefer to sell or buy with local ads and complete the transaction face to face. There are few users on here who are within a hour or so of my location --- I know of only one other in NM. Could be others who are silent on that.

I like to use the local sheriff's office parking lot to consummate the deal. Surprising how many sellers with an almost too good to be true deal back out of the sale when I suggest the exchange meeting be there.

Now, THAT is funny! But, it is a great idea, no doubt.

I live in Cambodia. So, meeting up to buy / sell would be a bit of a commute for me.

Iburners concept is good since we are all like-minded folks......maybe smaller stuff would not pose a shipping problem, but obviously the large stuff would have to remain local....

Just a thought. Im in a couple audio forums and used to frequent ADV rider which is a moto forum. Made a bunch of transactions, sales and purchases. Always nice to avoid e bay or get the stuff to some people who would get good use.
This site is so extensive I can see cameras to camping equipment being of interest to folks.
Possibly a moderator nightmare but usually its a buyer beware situation. A lot of the other forums have a post counter and year joined so you can get a good feel from who you are buying from.

Maybe a Deal of the Day or Dud Deals section. I run across deals on amazon, e bay etc. but don't necessarily want to start a new post on it. It might be handy to have a section for folks to post things that might be helpful to people, or on the flip side, a place to post deals that are duds!....then people that might be looking for items could just scroll thru it.
Rockies could probably keep it filled with different deals/duds all in one place. It would be a good way to see peoples reviews/opinions about different things.
For an example I just got a small alarm system that is perfect for out buildings or off grid cabins for $26 bucks from amazon.

Can you elaborate on this please?

Kerui brand. I tested the range of the motion detector. I put it in a 5th wheel camper about 30 feet away, outside the cabin where the receiver is. It tripped the alarm. The receiver/siren is the only thing that plugs in. But it converts down to 9 volts DC so it can be adapted to run off solar battery bank.

The marketplace idea...
... to compete with Ebay, Amazon, Craiglist, Kijiji ...

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Its not really so much a competition as a place to share things we not longer need to like minded members on this forum.
Guess idea isnt flying

Amazon has a deal that will pay you a comission if people click a link posted on ur site that leads to their site. It will pay comission for any purchases made. Even if it isnt the item from the link.
You make money if they make money! I know another site that does it.
Heck. Most of the time we will make purchases anyway. You might as well make a little money to offset your costs.

That would be cool if the forum made the commission.
I don't purchase off Amazon but that's a different story.

That's why I mentioned the amazon link deal. Since you first posted the market place idea. I have ordered/received 11 things from amazon. It would've been nice if Cabin Builder could have got some $ outta the deal. Like I said before. I am gonna order the stuff anyway. It wouldn't cost me anymore if I order it thru a link to here, or the other site I mentioned.

For a website owner to make money from items someone buys from Amazon, I believe there would have to be a link directly to that product on a page here at the forum. If you wanted to buy something that was not linked to, it does not count as a purchase towards making money as an affiliate. As a side note, I have seen a website or two where the site owner lists dozens, maybe hundreds, of items with links to buy them on Amazon. When somebody does that I believe it dilutes their credibility.

EDIT It appears that as long as one starts from an affiliate link they can change their mind on the product, buy something else, and it counts. Also a number of things that cab disqualify the purchase.

Good points. Food for thought.

There are two separate themes here:

1). A local market place (as per OP), for items to be listed here and sold through the forum.
That what I was referring to as a competition to big guys. Not sure about it.

2). Selling related products through ads/links to items on Amazon, EBay, etc.
That makes more sense to me. Thought about it - didn't want the site to be too pushy to sell products.
Will give it another sought.

Thanks for the input everyone. Let's keep the discussion going - Appreciate the ideas.

@,cabin builder. It's understandable that you don't want to seem pushy. I brought up the amazon link because I wasn't sure if you knew about it.
I have lost count of how many things I bought because others on the forum had suggested them. Everything from washing machines to led lites.
It only seems fair for you to get something to help keep this site going.

Kind of a way to pay it forward to you for a great website!💲👍
