I got my cabin 2 years ago. I know most people here built their cabins but I thought it would be cool to show my little cabin even though I didn't build it. Its located in the Mojave high desert about 20 min from Joshua Tree CA. I was originally going to build in the mountains of Big Bear CA but permits would of cost more than the build itself!! I estimate it would of cost about 30k on permits alone! We just fell in love with the desert. Our place is on 5 acres which is a lot for SoCal. I never imagined owning this much land near LA.

Hi Jesse - Is this in Wonder Valley? We have a cabin in the other desert homestead community down south of you.....amazing places with a great history.
There are some very cool cabins in your area!

Desert dwellers are/can be a bit weird.....hoarders are common, so are tweakers and drunks...ya never know

I personally think it's awesome. I would loved to have started with at least a rudimentary structure. No one says you have to start from scratch.
I would love to see some updated pictures!

Its in Johnson Valley, near Landers. I've been to Wonder Valley. The Palms Restaurant is awesome

I think the previous owner passed away. The cabin looked like no one had been there in years.

A bunch of these little cabins were built during the Small Tract Act of 1938. The US government was giving away 5 acres of land in the SoCal high desert IF you built a small home or cabin. If you couldn't build there were companies that would build a cabin for you. Most people who owned these cabins were from L.A. and just used them for recreational purposes. People nicknamed these cabins "jackrabbit homesteads" because lots of rabbits hanged out near these cabins for shade. High desert communities like Wonder Valley, 29 Palms, Joshua Tree, Landers, Johnson Valley, have a bunch of these small cabin all over the place.

The first thing I did was replace the door. I had a door stored in my garage for years that fit perfecty! I was happy I didn't have to buy a door AND I cleared up space in my garage!

jesse977, how much land is / was typically included with the purchase of one of those cabins? Or, is / was 5 acres the norm?

My cabin/property is also on a Homestead tract from the act of 1938. They are typically all 5 acre lots. Our little community is east of San Diego 100+ miles. Quite fascinating history.....one of our neighbors places is an old cabin from before WW2 that served as a nurse's quarters from the late 30's when Patton was training out in the desert getting ready for the North Africa campaign. There are still some old Sherman tanks abandoned out there as well.....

Thanks man. For one family, 5 acres is more than one would need. We have no current need for the majority of land here. So, we just grow rice on it until we decide what to do with the land.

When I saw the pic I thought. Ouch. Previous left a clean up job. But maybe with a few extras to pay back for the mess?
Those are some great nugget pics. The framing is an interesting testament to budget and climate.
I find 5a to be a real nice size also. I have hay and bird nesting fields on most. 2 small forests. Ontario brings a constant battle to keep the bird dropping brought shrubs down.

5 acres was the norm. You had to build the cabin first then the land would be yours.

I know that the military used to bomb these huge targets in the desert nearby. People find old undetonated WW2 bombs out here all the time. A lot of WW2 vets came out here for health reasons as well. What town is you cabin located Borrego?

We are about 25 minutes away from Pappy and Harriets. Awesome food and great live music. We missed watching Paul McCartney perform there once. He did a surprise show there not too long ago.

Here are the windows after I carefully replaced the bad wood. I gave the new wood a good coat of primer and 2 coats of paint. I removed some window putty that was old and brittle and applied some new putty. It gets cold in the winter up in the high desert. After I fixed the windows the place is a lot warmer at night.

No town anywhere near us. Funny because our Zip Code is the same as an old mountain mining town about an hour away (Julian). But we are no where near them. We are in the south part of the park, kinda in the middle of nowhere, much more isolated and desolate then where you are. You should take a drive down sometime to see your'sister' community....

Your place sounds awesome. We are planning to visit the Salton Sea. We might check out your neck of the woods. We want to keep the place as is. We love our little tiny cabin and want to keep it that way. We might build another structure on the property.

We have a neighbor that owns a loader and helped us do some grading around the property. He also graded our road. I wanted to keep the place looking natural but the ground was uneven. I want to plant a bunch of trees as soon as I get a chance.

I replaced some of the old original siding that was damaged, cracked etc. Luckily I was able to find original siding. The siding is made of asbestos so I'm happy I didn't have to cut any pieces and it just slid into place. I only switched out about 9 pieces. I did wear protective clothing and a face mask.
