So I'm needing to add additional sleeping room in my hunting shack. The living area of the shack is only 10' x 16'. So I am going to make a folding frame that lays flat against the wall then can fold up and attach to the ceiling via chain and eye bolts when needed. This frame work will hold a full size (54" x 74") air mattress. Was going to build the frame out of 1" x .120" wall aluminum square tube. The frame work will have 2 cross braces and then be covered with 5/8" plywood. It will be attached to the wall with a continuous hinge secured into the studs.
I can fabricate but doing structural calculations I just fly by the seat of my pants.
Think the frame work will hole 200 lbs?
anyone built anything like this and have some pictures?
last thing I need is to have it fall and bounce off the air mattress below me lol

I don't know how to make the calculations, but I have seen pictures of something similar on line. When it's a twin bed, I see it just held up by the chains. But when it's a full bed the torque is more, so I have seen that people put something under the far (non-hinge) side to support it. Something strong, but light and easy to move into place but later store away, like plastic milk crates.

If this second bunk is for occasional use only, Cabela's sells a nice cot that can be set up and taken down in a minute.

thanks for the ideas guy but it has to be suspended cause there will be a queen air bed on the floor below it. So a support on the offside from the hinge will end in up in the bed below. Wish i had more room to set up a second bed on the floor, know I should have built it bigger.
Love the seating bench that opens into a bed, might use that at the house in the spare room

Oh that's a tough one, then. I would bet that the fold down could hold it though, especially if the chains were anchored on the ceiling directly over where they attach to the bed, rather than at an angle from the wall. Personally, though, what you are describing sounds like my idea of a nightmare for sleeping. I can get by sharing a queen bed, but I don't sleep well at all sharing a full (double.) And sharing an air mattress is even tougher. I also have a 10x16 bunkhouse that can sleep 4, but each gets their own foam mattress. 2 are up on the floor of the loft. 2 are on the main floor in a trundle bed arrangement. If all 4 had to be down on the main floor, I would make or buy something like these ikea products that can stack a bunch. Maybe make them a bit narrower than standard twins to save space.

here is the wall ti will attach to. running long ways against the back wall and the chains or cables will attach to the ceiling on the edge opposite the hinge.
Guess i'll get some tube and see what happens. I'll do a test load at my house before I put it into use.

Wby dont you just build a full size bunk beds or get it on craigslist. People get rid of them sometimes for free. I had the same size cabin before addition, 10x16 and I had a full size futon and a loft with single bed. With bunk bed you could leave your mattress and not fold it every time you fold the bed.

I tear down the bed every morning and set up the folding table and chairs so i have somewhere to sit and eat. I need the additional mattress for sleeping additional people coming up on Thanks Giving. Right now I have a queen and twin air bed on the floor and need sleeping space for one more.

Just thinking about the beds in my pop up trailer....it is essentially an aluminum frame that is more a channel that slides on the tracks to pull in and out. This is thin aluminum and not tubular. The aluminum goes around plywood that Is 3/4" thick. This is a queen bed so the plywood is two pieces with a strip of 1/8" thick plywood about 4" wide stapled over the seem. It is supported by two 3/4" poles that are an angle to the frame. It is very solid. I don't see why your chain idea wouldn't carry the weight if it is beefy enough chain and maybe make the plywood 3/4" thick to make it more rigid.

Just a couple of pics to show a pop up bed system. I realize this is not what you want to do but I'm just trying to illustrate the the thin aluminum that is used to support these beds.

Only downfall is it's 34.5" deep and the air mattress is 38" deep, but i think it can be modified.

So I ended up with a french cleat on the wall and cabling it from the ceiling. I also am adding folding legs and a second cleat to the wall at table height so it can be used as a table also. Didn't turn out half bad, even if the dog wasn't too sure about it. it's solid.
