Hughes net works, not well enough to enjoy you tubes frequently and certainly not enough to stream TV, but it can be used for searching for information when needed and finding part numbers and placing orders.

My mountain property has no cell service. I could get landline and probably will if it is ever used enough to justify the expense.

Hughes net is too expensive in my opinion, but it does work when needed. I do not emergency communications at the property.

You may wish to look into Skyroam or silmilar companies. Looks like they got fairly good reviews. While it may be pricey, one could always choose which days to use and pay as you go. They apparently offer unlimited GB. http://www.skyroam.com/

Bump.

I am losing my free internet at my house in the ghetto since I got fiber at my cabin (long story).

I can get ATT fiber optic installed. Or, I have been testing using my cell phone as a hot spot. Seems to work well, streams video from the smart TV and my desktop no problem. I now pay $30 a month for my cell phone, but for $50 I can get unlimited 4G whiz bang. Cheaper and less hassle than getting the fiber line.

So what's the down side?

Is it really unlimited data, with no slowdown once you hit a monthly quota?

The plan I have now slows down, here are the options. The asterisk says if you go over 60 gigs they turn you in for abuse or something.

If anyone is interested, I can describe the system i deployed that is about 16 miles from the nearest cell tower and gets LTE speeds most of the time.

I had very poor cell signal, like -120 or -125db as I was about 12 miles from my nearest tower through fairly heavy tree cover. Under perfect circumstances I could occasionally make a call or get a text message through, but no Internet service.

I got the smallest WeBoost system and it works exactly as advertised, inside my place now i have full LTE internet and fast download speeds. The upload speeds aren't great (I wouldn't be gaming on it) but it is fine for pretty much everything else. I even use it to work a bit, including Zoom teleconferencing and everything else you can think of.

I use a Chromecast to cast Youtube to my TV for some variety in what to watch when I feel like it, just have to watch the data usage. Most 3 day weekends I only use maybe 2GB of data or so while I'm there which isn't too bad. I got tired of using my phone as a hotspot so I bought an LTE hotspot and added that to my data share plan, then used a traditional wireless router to broadcast that out to the rest of the property.

I enjoy the creature comforts and being able to work a bit from there helps me maximize my downtime by extending how long I'm there even if I'm doing light work.

For anyone in a similar situation, start by downloading an app to your phone to check the true signal strength of your cell connection - don't rely on the number of bars...its meaningless data. Once you know what signal you do have you will know your options to fix it. If you have no signal at all...then your options become more limited.
