maybe a few chickens ( for eggs). I cant kill a bug, a chicken is completely out of the question. Hubby jokes we would have the oldest cow in Michigan.

*ROTFL* You and me both. I wanted chickens until I realized that they don't lay eggs until they die of old age. *S* When I read you're supposed to kill and eat the chickens when they stop laying, Hubby said "NO WAY are we getting chickens because we'd have hundreds of old hens running around doing nothing but pooping and making lots of noise."

Don't get me wrong - I'm no vegetarian, but I just get so attached to anything cute like a chicken, pig, cow, goat - well you see the pattern here. Anything I give a name to would be out of bounds for eating. *S*

watch some crap on tv

naturelover66,

I've been watching 'The Universe' on Science Channel HD while perusing this forum tonight. I used to think there was not much good to watch on TV until we invested in digital cable at home.

I don't know if anyone else has been watching this series but for this feeble mind it sure generates some food for thought.

The universe in which we live is so beautiful in its simplicity from a natural viewpoint, and so complicated to comprehend in its origins and workings, and the human species presses on with its scientific investigation, inventing so many wonderful new things along the way. Will we ever begin to scratch the surface of all-encompasing knowledge, or will every new discovery trigger yet more unanswered questions and throw everything we thought we knew into revision?

I am thankful for both my interest in modern science and discovery as well as my appreciation for the non-scientific, simpler way of life espoused by we who frequent this little chapter of cyberspace we share here. I didn't know I was so multi-faceted.

And last but not least:
How the heck can the same guy who narrates this exceptional series with such eloquence be the same person who sells Fords on the side and make such a fool of himself on 'Dirty Jobs' on another network.

Oh yeah, I just remembered, it's TV!!!

I think T-Tech, has it dead right on. Put it all together, enjoying it as it happens, and when the time comes, make the move.
Our time line is 3 yrs, and if something horrible happens to me during that time, well that's life. Cabi3 will have her place, I've seen to it, financially.
"you should be able to live where you want after raising your kids and being a loving devoted wife for 42 years. You deserve it damnit."
Careful with that.
I've been a stabilizing force in an unstable world for those 42 yrs, it's my duty as a husband.

Every thinking person should have a plan, and ours is in place, although time is not totally on our side. There's lots to do, and we are doing it.
And I'm going to enjoy it too, dammit.
In the meantime, I'll be dancin' in the rain.

Very interesting post. My wife and I, like many others here, were not completely on the same page about our use of the cabin. When I bought it she knew I was looking at it, but I made the deal without her "permission". I had to. It was a "yes or no" moment, and I couldn't let it get away. The deal was with a friend of mine and he was tettering on the edge - getting old, should I sell, how much, and when he shot me a price it took me about ten seconds to shake his hand and say "yes". He's the kind of guy whose hand shake is as good as his signature, but we followed it up with a contract just for each others peace of mind.

For the first few years my wife always referred to it as "your cabin", and I would correct her with "our cabin". Eventually I began to learn and practice the gathering and processing of wild rice from our lake, and she enjoyed the fruits of that labor. But it was after a nurse she works with and likes a lot said "wow, you actually gather wild rice - how cool, I'd love to do that", etc, etc, that my wife took a whole different look at "my cabin". Her work friend brought her husband up for ricing, and a new world opened up for all of us. It's now a yearly event and others have also joined in.

As an off shoot to the ricing, one couple brought up a kayak for us to try. My wife feel in love with it and we now own four of our own. From our cabin we kayak our small lake, paddle a mile long river to a larger lake, or drive a short distance to float a river. We often do these things with other friends who also own kayaks, or with our kids and grandkids.

The bottom line, it's now "our cabin". The pictures come out during family gatherings such as Christmas, and plans for ricing, kayaking or bough gathering for next years Xmas wreaths are set in motion. It sure makes it easier for me to justify the time and money needed for the cabin budget when its a shared love.

My hubby and I also kayak....... small inland lakes and even taken the plunge in Lake Huron a time or two. Its so nice floating around...... fingers trailing the water........... no noise....... just the sound of the paddle water dripping over the edge. You glide along so quietly..... the deer, beavers, swans and other beautiful wildlife dont even hear you . Nice way to get up close photographs.

Gary O -- I know, youre right....... i have a do- it - now kinda attitude since my heart attack and open heart surgery nearly took my life two years ago....... Im so emotional about it... its impossible to put into words........ I was working 70 hours a week before it happenend. Now i can barely make forty hours............ I had perfect credit....... never missed a payment...... now , im racked with Medical Debt.
I guess i was running in circles trying to make ends meet........ pay the bills, keep my kids in nice clothes and try to save some money.
Now.......... i say EFF it all !! I want/ need a simplier life........ i want to be self sustaining........ lower my cost of living ........ enjoy nature.
I feel as though all the working and saving i did....... was for absolutely nothing. One ruptured artery saw to that.
You and Cabingal3 will have your retired cabin life style if youre lucky.
I just dont count on luck anymore.

I hear that!
And I get it too.
Cabi3 has been my yin forever, and we move about this encrusted orb as one.
We really don't need any thing for real happiness and joy, but being out in nature is the truest of enhancement for both of us.
When I release these bonds of laboring for others, we will move. And whenever the day comes that one of us passes, we will carry the other's memories.
Everything I add to that land will be her visual of me, and everything she touches there will be mine.
Ultimately, our urgency is to be together, anywhere.

Bobrok--------- Yes, the Universe series is facinating...... makes you feel quite "small". I for one would head up in the depths of our Galaxy in a heart beat......... My hubby and I used to "encourage" our boys to watch the Space Shuttles take off........ we visited cape canaveral years ago in Sunny Florida and were hooked.
Just imagine.......... floating around in space.... would nt that be a life experience ??
I know ppl who would never even consider space travel....... even if we could.

I hate TV... I watch the morning news before i head out..... catch the weather.........
I despise these "Celebrities" that Americans for some strange reason admire so much. How can firefighters earn 40 grand a year....... and Charlie Sheen makes 2 Mil a week?? Really ticks me off.
Anyhoo......... im off topic .
Thanks for the Info on the Universe Special.

After a heart attack, cardiac death and open heart surgery....... life looks different.

I had my own near-death experience this morning. Driving about 50 down a 2 lane country highway in the rain when the car coming towards me lost control. I drove almost straight into her drivers door at a combined speed of at least 80 MPH. She did not survive the collision and I walked away almost completely uninjured.

I bought a lottery ticket tonight

I'm sure that will change your life forever. I'm glad you are okay, but sorry the woman in the other car didn't make it. Life is too short. *sigh*

That's terrible, Rob. Tragic for the other party, but you're lucky to have made it relatively unscathed. Thank God and count your blessings. I'm happy for you.

The soreness and bruising will pass quickly. The rest is going to take some time to wrap my brain around. I know there's nothing I could have done differently and it wasn't my fault, but that doesn't make the images in my mind go away

Rob_O,

That's a pretty heavy duty event for you to have to deal with and my sympathies go out to you and the victim. I don't know how I would handle something like that, especially when it occurs so unexpectedly.

I have an opinin on things like this and I promise not to wander too far OT this time:

I believe that everything happens for a purpose, both good and bad, and that this was destined to happen by a higher power than we can understand. Our job is to use the experience to the best advantage as we can in our quest for the meaning of life, for lack of a better term.
My daughter, who lives 5 states away, is getting married and had planned to fly home to do wedding planning. Her plans and dates changed, but finally, after all the scheduling was in place, she bought her airline ticket and arrived at midnight on Thursday, Feb. 24th. We had a long, full weekend planned and her employer had even accommodated her with time off for this in advance.
On Friday morning her grandmother died and all our plans changed. But the fact is that she was already here; we didn't require emergency flight plans, etc.
I don't know how to rationalize this except to say that it was meant to be.

Being a nurse for 30+ years, several in the ER, I have learned that God's will is always done. Sometimes we go to our grave asking the question "why not me". Sometime and somewhere in the future, you are meant to touch the heart and soul of someone. You will make the difference in that person's life. And you know what? You may never know who it is but it is meant to be.

Rob O------- Im so sorry to hear about your ordeal. Youre so fortunate........ i know the post traumatic stress of having the accident and reliving it in your mind will be quite upsetting for a while. And after living thru this.... you will feel differently about many things.
Lean on your loved ones........ and let them help you cope.
Glad youre alive........... sorry for the other driver.

Personally....... im not at all religious. I was raised religious.... but its just not in me. I kinda have a " thats life" attitude. Im more of a scientific minded person.
I love how Erins#1 Mom said it. It was meant to be.
I hope you are Okay.

I just think its odd that most women want the shopping malls and beauty salons at their back door...... most men want to run away to nature for peace and relaxation. Its the opposite in my house.

i sure do agree gal.i love our cabin.i love the woods.i always have and i could move there in a heartbeat.my girlfriends say to me...wont u get bored?what s out there? i say u can never be bored in the woods...ever.
then my sister is a rich girl but she gets it.she is fancy and married to a rich man...but u cannt take the country and the woods out of her.If her hubby dies...she tells me this...sister,come with me and we will get a place on the lake .and we will have goats, chickens and horses.ew...i would never go live with fancy girl.love her but nope.my woods is it for me.the calm.i still want to drag my chair to the meadow and watch the sun rise. i sure hope u get to go to your woods naturelover cause no matter heart attack or what have u...life is for living and if u cannot have the hope of doing the things u wish...well its passing us by.

Naturelover66 - I remember the day I brought my husband to an acre of water access only property and told him that it was my summer retirement dream. I think he thought I was smoking those "special" BC cigarettes. There was so much fallen timber we could only get 6 steps on the property...had no idea if there was a big pond in the middle, a stream running through it, or a cliff face in the middle. No clue.

We we bought it anyways.....us women have our ways to "encourage" our partners:)

Fast forward 4 years and now we can not wait to retire there for 6 months a year and in Nicaragua for the other 6 months....We are just waiting for the kids to finish high school. We have 15 years until earliest pension date (55 years). That plus CPP (Same as social security in the US) and the value of our home in the least affordable city in Canada, is way more than we will need with this cost of living.

No water bills, it is spring water gravity fed to our cabin. No electricity, the sun gives us what we need. Expect for property taxes of a mere $300 per year and propane/food (which we will catch, trap, hunt, and grow or raise......[I have no problem with the use and preparation of chicken.....a few years of beans and rice 3x's a day in peace corps gave me the ability to overlook my distaste for the process of animal preparation for the taste of anything beside a bean])

The kiddies will be out of school in 15 years (we started way late:), so when we are no longer needed by them on a daily basis, the house is going and we are heading to the beach on a perm basis.

I want to spend my last 3rd of life in a way that is meaningful to me. Luckily my hubby and best friend has found the same meaning.

We are counting the days and I totally understand where you are coming from!

I plan on living in my cabin from May to Oct in the near future, just have to get things together a little more. It is 10,000 feet up in the mountains, and the winters are very rough. I am up there almost every weekend now.
