Today we were finally able to move into our new cabin. we did not build it, but bought it outright, and it is a pretty cushy cabin, with a septic, a well and pump, electric and a wood burning stove (which will be replaced with a better one soon). It has a driveway off a seasonal semi-maintained road so we were able to haul things up and with the help of my daughter and her lovely beau, we were able to get moved in in a few hours. when we turned the pump on, we discovered that a pipe had burst, so we quickly turned all of that back off. I am attaching a few photos here. One of the things I really is that the lights are way too bright. But at any rate, we are super excited to have this space for writing, relaxing and getting away from it all.

Congrats! It looks very nice. One thing that concerns me are the walls behind the wood stove. There seems to be two small metal panels (?) behind the wood stove attached to the walls but they only come up about 18" or so. Are those the wall protectors, because if so they don't come up high enough. You need metal panels installed to code and spaced about an inch off the walls using ceramic spacers.

If you're replacing the wood stove you might consider getting a soapstone clad one. The soapstone holds the heat much longer than a simple metal firebox and there's less chance of burning yourself if you brush against the stove.

For those in Central New York, in the new year for sure!

As for the stove, we are going to get the entire stove brought up to code as soon as we replace it in February. The guy who built the cabin did a lot of things right and a lot of things wrong.

Actually, there is nothing behind the stove. I am having the whole kit and caboodle replaced and brought up to code. The idea of getting crispy does not appeal to me.

Very nice looking place. Lucky you! Good move to get the stove up to code. It's the last thing you want to take chances with.

What area of central, NY?

My cabin is near Swain ski mountain. Six miles away near. Most my neighbors are Amish. My five year plan is to retire and move there permanently. We spend every weekend and then some now. Heaven on earth as far as we are concerned.

My previous owner also did wood stove wrong but that wasn't the scary part. The electrical work was a nightmare. How the place didn't burn down was a mystery to me. I spent two weeks alone fixing that. The start was disconnecting all the circuits from the panel and fixing or rewiring everyone of them. He had a 200 amp panel with a grand total of two circuits. But that was the least of the issues.

Yes, getting everything up to code is my priority. As much as I get irritated by code guys I do like code n matters that involve fire and electricity.

We are near Greek Peak near Cortland, McGraw. I think it might be fin to have a cabin meet up for New Yorkers at some point.

Nice area and Greek Peak is a decent hill if you ski. Deer ally though, same as my place.
I really don't worry much about cars when I get close to my place as there isn't many. But deer!!!! You get skilled driving forward watching sides of road.

I will work on getting some. It was all still pretty junked up by the previous owner with too many knick knacks and signs and stuff, so I did not take any. I will and will post them.Janemarie
