Ok, so I’m new to all of this. I have been doing some reading on here and there is a lot of good info here. So here I go, I am looking at getting a cabin on my property. I’ve looked into building or buying one. It looks like it will not cost much more to just buy one then I don’t have to worry about the building process. I’m looking at a 12 by 16. I will not have power to the cabin. Im thinking about buying a generator and also maybe doing a solar system for just lights. The only thing I want to have in the cabin is a window ac, lights and a couple outlets. And not sure what I want to do for heat. This will be something that I use a few times a year. I guess I’m just looking for input and do’s and dont’s. Thanks

If you want a window AC, you will need power, at least a generator.

You did not list a location. I would suggest you consider as many windows as possible for cooling. Gives you more light also. Think about cabin orientation.
Enjoy

I use a propane heater for my insulated 6" thick walled 12 x 16. Most woodburners are just too much for this size, and my cabin is in Montana. There are these micro wood stoves, but they are quite expensive and I wonder if they have a very long burn time, wouldn't think so....

Colorado here. Don't have to worry about humidity here. If you build, you would need a genny anyway. Look around for used, or HF. I went HF. Worked well. Use it for the microwave now. Solar for 7 lights, IPad charging. Depending on your winter use? Look around for direct vented propane heater. Got a small Northern Tool heater new for a good price.
Really, think about windows, cabin orientation (morning patio time), maybe an accessory building for the little ladies (we need this!) stuff. Building was an adventure. Enjoy!

AC for the cabin?

What are your summer temps like?

You will need a well insulated place or your ac will run all the time = gasoline.

I'm lucky as I almost always have a breeze blowing off lake Ontario.

Yes, I think I would need ac while being inside. Humidity here in the summer gets to be pretty bad. Looking at either a 2000 watt predator from harbor freight or a 3500.

My Cabin in Eastern Mt is 14x26 with porch, inside is 14x20. I`ve stayed in the cabin with temps as low as -30F in the winter to 100F in the summer. I have 2 generators, 7500 and 3500 watts. In the winter when I need to warm it up I use 2 1500 watt oil filled space heaters. I use the 7500 watt gen when the cabin is cold and once its heated up I switch to the 3500 and it stays warm with both space heaters on low (1200 watts).
In the summer I use a 14,000 btu portable AC and it will cool the cabin in a hour with outside temps above 90F. The 3500 watt gen works fine for the summer. I should add that my cabin is well insulated. I wouldn`t go with anything less than a 3500 watt generator. My 3500 watt gen won`t handle 3000 watts. So when you figure your total watts being used go bigger when buying a generator.
Good luck on your cabin, you won`t regret it!
