Anyone have any recommendations for software for planning a cabin?
Framing even?

I use Chief Architect, the trial version. It is free but the trial version prevents you from saving your drawings (just take screen grabs to get around that). The downside is you have to leave the program open all the time because once you close it all your work is lost.
Still, it will allow you to quickly lay out a cabin, updates sections and elevations whenever you make a change and you can also create a full materials list.

I use Sketchup, it takes a bit to design your cabin but it is free and it does a great job. I have designed my bunkie and it turned out great!

Sketchup is good. I use it along with the plugins from this guy. He also has assorted other useful tools available. I do still use paper and pencil a lot too though.

Does Chief Architect let you do a custom framing plan/design?
I'm at teh stage that I need to draw out the stud/framing plan for each wall, and I need a way to do that easily, or I'll be drawing it by hand.

Chief Architect has a function for the framing. The program will select standard sizes for posts, headers, beams etc based on code but you can also increase the size of the framing members if you want. Once you're satisfied you hit the button and it automatically creates all the framing.
It will also create 3D models of the framing, you can view individual wall framing elevations and then you can create a materials list based on either a cut list (each framing members length) or a total amount of material needed for the project (a buy list).

I ended up using Microsoft Visio. I know it seems weird to use the same system I use for breaking up software/database/process flows. But it worked.
Sketchup was my original plan but I found I was a lot quicker in Visio.
