Looking good! And glad to hear the bugs are calming down, we're heading upstate soon. The flies were really bad this year on our earlier trips up. When do you think you'll be doing the "big" cabin build?

The plan in the back of my head is to finalize the drawings this winter, get the permits in the spring, summer/fall get the sono tubes in and floor framing done and tarped for the winter. Then in early spring of the following year hit it hard to hopefully get a dryed in structure done before the mosquitos/flies get bad in the heat of the summer.

I have a rough drawing sketched out and we have been collecting building materials. I got brown metal roofing, 7 large windows and the ash floor boards milled out.

Im really starting to want a shipping container up there just to keep collected materials in.

Looks great! I really like your space. The blackflies and mosquitoes can get pretty bad in my area as well, though the blackflies usually only last a couple weeks. I got one of those propane powered mosquito traps that seems to be working well. My wife calls it "Mega Death". We have noticed an improvement. I read somewhere that if you can kill one female at the beginning of the season you can prevent 1 million of its offspring from bothering you. I think its called the Blue Rhino Skeetervac. Worth looking into. One 20lb tank lasts a month.

Thank you.

I looked into all types of fly/mosquito killing decives. Im keeping an eye out for a used propane powered one in the off season.

A big double 3 day weekend at the shed this past weeks. More stone delivered, wood shed built and semi filled, burned a brush pile, got the water pump working and the IBC tote filled. Its pumping at 7.5gpm into our tank, 35min on the generator and that should be enough water for half a year. Got a bunk bed built out of beatle kill ash i milled. I highly recomend the 6in foam mattresses walmart has. And...we have a hot shower with a half built shower stall. Lots of work for one guy and two dogs.

I have to drive to town, about 30min to get the wood chips for around the cabin. I also placed a tree stand on state land and scoped out a spot on my own property.

I can be real ache at night and at home i wore out a very expensive bed in 3years. Il buy one of these walmart foam mattresses again. I bought a king and cut it in half to make two twin XL mattresses. Cuts real easy with a circular saw.

Spent the wekend at the property again. Got the wood stove mostly in, it still needs a heat shield for the stove pipe. Worked on the shower stall a bit more, put up a ladder stand and cleared some more tree tops covered in pricker bushes. We also burned a large pile of brush. I got rained out for half the weekend but overall not a bad weekends work was done.

Fall is a great time to be in the woods.

Do you plan to insulate?

The ceiling is 70* insulated with foam board that i cut to fit between the rafters and spray foamed the cracks. That was one of the things i can do mid day durring hunting season or in the rain. The floor has foam tiles and im not going to insulate the walls.

Brett,

Interested in the foam tile idea...

Are they like the puzzle piece gym floor tiles? Doing some research on them, doesn't seem like they really have any R-Value. I did find one person on YouTube using them in a camper and they liked the result of keeping the floor warmer.

What do you think? Wondering if I could do my whole first floor with them and then not worry about insulating underneath??? Are they easy to clean mud , melting snow, etc?

Jeff i had the tiles, they where a road find a few years ago. They arnt the easiest to clean but eadier that plywood. Not sure on tje R value if nothing less it helps seal the floor a bit and softer under foot. This shed will eventually be either a bunk house or just a tool shed. Its final use is known at the moment so we are trying to keep costs low and yet still be comfortable.

This is great. I am in Central New York as well (though you are technically in what is called The Southern Tier). Your project looks great.

Its now rifle season at the property. I spent some time up there with the wood stove ripping. It was nice to have a warm dry area to hang out and sleep durring hunting although once the stove went out it get cold quick. The road was a sheet of ice, no town maintenance after nov 1st. I also shot my first deer. A nice mature 10pt.

No real property updates but a local tree company did drop off a bunch of pine logs for me. Some where 7ft long and not to useful for the future cabin build. Between short logs and the large pile of slab wood I have laying around I decided to build a small 4x6ft 7ft tall hunting shack.

The runners are 7ft long 6x6 ash that's notched into cross braces and through bolted. The floor is scrap 1in thick from those same logs that I made into ship lap on the table saw. The idea is that in the future I will build legs for it so a strong base will be important.

The hunting shack is now done but not get been brought to the property.

Last week I was able to go to the property for thr first time in 5 months. We marked out the cabin site, moved and rebuilt the shower along with other general opening weekend items.

The shower now has 3 walls and a roof. I'm building a door /second wall at home to bring up later.

We also found a spring that looks very promising on the property

Late spring update.
We have now located and cleared a cabin site along with removing any trees that could be a future issue. Removed the stumps and graded off the area. This past weekend I also burned all the brush. I also brought up a water tank that I'm going to burry under the cabin as our plans for a water source has now changed. We found a spring on the property that I improved and even with very little rain its producing 5gpm.

We now have a cleared build site that I will leave to the mosquitos until fall. It should be well compacted by then.

The mosquitos finally gave up enough for me to have some cabin time...they own the place for the summer. I was able to get 470w of solar on the roof, 40a CC, 1200w inverter and 30a iota charger all hooked up and running a mini fridge. I also found these LED string lights on amazon that only use 30w and light the place up really well.

I spent a few hours moving gravel from the road up our 700ft driveway so now have a gravel covered driveway. I also installed our vintage stove and a section of countertop...gone is the plastic table.

Great looking place Brett. Love the white boxer , have had a couple in the family and they have some REAL personality...
In my mid teens I had an uncle that lived in Menands and I spent several vacations up there. Really some beautiful country. We spent a lot of time up around Lake George and further up around Lake Placid. Was the best man at his wedding on Long lake.

Great thread , keep it coming...
