Hi everyone.
I am new here and I am building a small log cabin. Thus I decided to share my experience of building small log cabin with people on this forum. Because only people on this forum can appreciate the building process of small cabin building.
I never built any house or cabins before, so please do not hit/kick me too hard for not professionally built a cabin.
It is what it is.
I decided to build this cabin because I had lots of trees have been downed by hurricane Irma in 2017 on my eucalyptus plantation. I began to clear the land and collect trees for logs in earlier months of 2018, and began to build the cabin in October 2018. The cabin I am building is not a house for permanent leaving. It is recreational cabin that does not require building plans to follow. I hope when I will finish it, the cabin will be fun place to stay for hunting or camping trips for me, my kids and my grand kids.
I am building it all by myself without help from anyone. Pictures represent progress from October 2018 till present. There is much more work to be done to finish it, but here it is.....

Happens a lot with pictures taken on a phone, sometimes with digital cameras too. When viewed on the device that took them they appear okay. When viewed on a PC image viewer they usually look okay too. When uploaded to forums they often are sideways or upside down. I always edit my images first (on PC or using image editor on phone) and that corrects the orientation.

Do a search and you can find articles online that describe the problem and the fix.

These pictures were made in April 2018. Debarking of freshly cut eucalyptus trees is easy process, because there are so much moisture under bark. It pills very easy, but if it is hot outside in few hours it dries up and debarking becomes very long and annoying process. If tree was down for few days, it is best to wait few months until trunks dry up completely as bark comes off itself. The only problem at that point trunks are getting twisted and split a lot.

I never built log cabin before so I had to research “how to” on internet, to choose building type. I decided to use butt and pass method as it is easiest and fastest way to build log cabin. I practice by building small “power house”, where I placed 9000w gas generator and 4500w gas inverter/generator.

I made 8 concrete pads reinforced with rebars to raise bottom logs above ground. During Florida rain season, between August and October there are lots of standing water everywhere, as water table comes up all the way to surface. Corner pads have ¾ rebars come up from to anchor bottom logs to.
September 16th 2018 first logs were placed on concrete pads.

I still have full time work during week so I can only build the cabin on weekends. This is one of the reasons progress of my project is quite slow. Plus I do hunt and go deep sea fishing once in a while.
These pictures were taken in November 2018.

My goal is to finish roof before raining season stars to keep logs dry. I do not plan to do much during hot summer months as it is very difficult to labor in extreme Florida hit for me. Next step will be building floor and then placing filler between logs.

Very interesting build! The landscape looks so different down there. What is your dirt like? In some places it looks like white sand. Are you near the ocean?

I dug 12 feet deep pond and used that dirt to raise ground for the cabin. There is sandy soil when you dig past 3 feet or so, and after 8 feet there is clay soil at our SW part of Florida.

It has been almost a year from my last update. I did not have much time to work on my log cabin as other stuff was a priority during last year, but I did work a little bit on the cabin. Here are more updated pictures.
I finished roof, floor, installed front door and windows. Next step will be to fill up spaces between logs with cement mixed with lime.
I did not stay over night in the cabin yet but I shoot few hogs from window of the cabin. It fills much safer inside the log cabin during hunt when 15- 20 big wild hogs come to feed at night and you are sitting in the tent with rifle.

Looks great ! Glad to see the update. And proud for you. You’re going to have lots of fun with your family. By you building this cabin your family will have many more opportunities to be in the outdoors. Literally a whole new world in my mind. And building a project like this seems to have brought you self satisfaction. Knowing you did it. Solving the problems unique with every build.
You’re doing good. Keep us in the loop and always feel free to add in some stories about enjoying cabin life beyond the building process. The world you live in is totally different then mine. So always interesting. And I know that I enjoy hunting stories.
