I enjoy the posts about the shooting range, and I thought I'd ask what others particularly like for cartridges. I find .38-40 is fun to shoot, as is .30-40 Krag. .270 is good for deer, and Jack O'Connor swore by it.

.270 is my deer /hog killing caliber............
turkeys.............12 gauge w/ hevi shot........
coyotes and other vermin...........22-250
tree rats and such.........17
truck gun for rattlers etc.........22 mag and the .410

7MM Rem. Mag for Carribou, Elk and spot and stock bear
350 Rem. Mag or 450 Bushmaster for hogs
204 Ruger DPMS, 223 DPMS, 6MM Rem or 222 Rem for coyotes and target shooting....they are all favorites.
I spend more time taking pics now but used to filll the freezer each year with these rifles!

45 Colt, 45-70, 270 Win, 300 RUM, 303 Brit, 30-40, 22 WRF, 22 LR, 357 mag, 380 ACP, 45 ACP, 9 mm, 28 g, 20 g, 12 g, 22-250, 30-30, 32-40, 577-450 MH (for varmits).

Good question Erins#1Mom..... I hate guns...... im basically afraid of them.... i guess for the simple reason i dont know how to use one. I recently had a discussion with the hubby about taking a gun safety course to get over my fear and maybe actually consider learning how to shoot. His eyes about bugged out. He was shocked....... lol.
I think growing up in Detroit........ all i heard was guns kill ppl...... all the time unfortunatley. Im afraid of the things.
So........ as far as a gun....... which one to buy??

Does the gun need to be portable like a handgun? Or will a long gun, rifle or shotgun do? As for 4 legged critters what kind/size? Bigger animals require bigger bullets; bigger bullets mean more recoil. Self defense in a home? Hard to beat a shotgun, but only one the shooter can handle.
Take a course from a good licensed instructor that can supply a variety of firearms to try before you buy one. There is no one best gun. The best, IMO, is the largest caliber bullet that one can shoot accurately and consistently. That varies.

There are Black bear near my new cabin..... well, i guess its their home but if im out exploring and a bear approaches aggressively...... i need a pistol ? Or a shotgun? I hear youre never supposed to run....... make alot of noise and wave your arms . But, if im in bear country...... i guess i want to learn how to protect myself.
So, i guess i need to find a licensed instructor..... take a class...... then get a permit to purchase ?? Or do you buy the gun and then take it to the cops to apply for a permit after they clear it and you get your background check done? I need to find out how it works......
I feel stressed out just thinking about it..... i think i have a gun phobia or something.......... lol

i varies from state to state........
our handgun permit, is 70 dollars and good for 5 years......
i always have mine in my pocket.............never now when you will need it ---this day and time----
go online and google handgun permit---for your state. Most states do a background check.

seriously, if you prefer no guns, i suggest bear spray on a hip holster. It'll knock the bear senseless for a few seconds in for for you to escape to safety. shoots some 20-30 feet.

My wife is English. She had a phobia about guns too. It was more the fact that she didn't know about them. Just what she heard and saw on TV. I taught her gun safety and now I think she like to target shoot more than me! One of her favorite guns is a 22-250. She has shot guns and big as a 12ga and 45/70 with 500 grain bullets. The best advice is know your gun (clean it, load it, clear it) and be comfortable with it. For home defense it is hard to beat a shotgun.

As was mentioned, gun laws, both purchasing and owning, vary all over the US and are more strict in Canada. In NM it is very easy to purchase with no licenses required; just the federal check.
My favorite fun shoot would be a toss up between my 10/22 with Volquartzen barrel and trigger using Wolf Target ammo, or the AR15 with White Mountain 24" target barrel and Timney trigger or a flintlock or caplock 50 cal black powder rifle. Black powder is a lot of fun.

Completely different story north of the border...not aloud to carry handguns anywhere in canada.. THey are strictly inforced and only to do shot at the gun range

Yeah, thats the thing............ i will take a class...... pay an instructor to teach me how to handle and load the thing properly.... Pay Cabelas or some merchant bizillions of dollars for a legal gun. Pay for the background check and all that crap.......
While a few miles away in Detroit....... some kid has a car load hes just trying to unload illegally....... for 50 bucks.
So, really........ what is the right thing ? The Moral thing?? Some very intelligent people want guns banned...... at least hand guns..... I know, I know, a very controversial issue .
Protection..... versus your right to carry/own.
Interesting discussion/ topic ??
I have mixed feelings...
A few minutes ago on the evening news here..... a Detroit Cop is being buried...... Killed while investigating a B&E. Some punk with another illegal gun. I dont know what the answer is. I sure wish someone would figure it out.

Very controversial issue for sure. I have some rather strong feelings on this. If you do a crime with a gun= time in prison. If you kill someone it is the death penalty for you unless it was in self defense. Don't waste the time or money keeping people alive in prison for 20 + years. 5 year max and the to the chair. Taxpayers money at work. Sorry I'm tried of working two jobs so my taxes can pay for the leeches on society.

Hick-- I completely understand your point of view.....
I also understand some ppls argument that jail time/ prison does not solve this problem. I agree that ppl need to be accountable for their actions....... be punished for a wrong doing.......
Maybe there is a different solution....... something that would not only punish the guilty offender but change their ways permanently . A way that could benefit others in their community.

Not to belittle anything or anyone but most guns found in the possession of criminals in the US are not illegal guns. Rather the person is in illegal possession of the gun. There is a difference. Sorry, but I find it important to differentiate between the two.
I can own just about any single shot or semi automatic firearm I want to spend the money for. The convicted felon and a few others can not legally possess a single shot 22 cal firearm.
If any firearm is used in the commission of a crime the penalties should be severe but I have a few problems with automatic death penalties as I have read of too many cases of mistaken identity and miscarriages of justice by police and prosecutors. That's another issue.

Thanks for getting this back on-topic (I, of all people, should be saying this, right? Brownie points to me!!!!!)
The OP up top is Shooting Range, Part II, favorite cartridge. If there is a Part I about building a range I couldn't find it in search mode, so I am gonna be brave and run with your last post.
I want to set up a small, portable range, if there is such a thing. A friend of mine suggested that at its simplest, a couple of straw bales with a 3/4" plywood sandwiched between them would be sufficient for, say 12 ga. target loads.
What say you?

To answer to the OP: handgun: .45 ACP (happy birthday btw!)
rifle: 7.5x55. My K31, affectionately called my Swiss girlfriend, is a great shooter. Currently shooting the original open sights but would love to put a scope on it for some really long range shooting!
