Any woodworkers out there? I have a hand hewn beam I kept outside for a couple years as a firepit bench. I soaked it in a semitransparent Thompson's water seal. Now I want to make a fireplace mantel out of it for our family room. The color of the stain is awful and I want to change it to a more natural color...or somehow remove the stain altogether. Is it possible? The beam has hewn marks so I can't sand it.

I was told you can’t but stain on wood that has had Thompson’s on it .

If the beam has enough meat in it use a drawknife to re-hew it. The stain doesn't penetrate too deeply as a rule.

A power washer may work. At least it would be my first choice. I have used one to clean up logs that have turned grey or stained. Makes them look almost new.

I would also try pressure washing it. Use a yellow or white nozzle.
Hand hued beams are suprisingly easy to find around here. Since you left it outside for years i would allow it to dry for at least a year before you make it into anything thats going in your house.
