Has anyone ever used rough sawn green pine for porch decking? I am going to build my porch next week and am tempted to deck with this pine from the mill because it is so cheap. I know normally pine would not be ideal for a deck but it is covered. Thoughts?

Green wood is going to crack and check badly. Sticker it and let it dry, then at least plane one side of it.

Nothing wrong with pine for a deck. Pine is the wood of choice when looking for a species that will take pressure treatment well. However, I would not use green lumber. Sticker it and let it season, then run it through the planer. That doesn't help if you are in a hurry but I believe it will make much better decking.

See if they have ceder. It is fine green because it will not shrink much and has better chance of lasting

Went with 5/4 cedar decking. Got it all for $150 from the seconds pile at the lumber yard.

Nice! Love the rim board... really finishes it off. I'm too lazy to do that!

Finished up the steps and am now back home to deal with kids home from school for at least 2 weeks and a wife freaking out about coronavirus. Wish I was still at the cabin.

I will be framing my cabin soon with rough cut lumber that has been cut for about a month. I do not have much experience with green stick framing. I am comfortable with the shinkage and all that. The area i am thinking hard about is the floor and joist insulation. I am building this on 6x6 skids on well drained raised slab. Should this only be spray foamed and left open? or can i close the joists in with plywood top and bottom and R30 batts in between them. Will there be a potential mold problem due to the green ish lumber? Has anyone ventured down this similar road? Any other green stick frame pointers?

Sounds like a good 'new thread' topic (since your specific q&a's can be in your thread and and not caught here)
