Shabin is looking great , I along with the others really like the combination siding. Is that a trimmed down ladder rack on your SxS ? I love the idea . I am in the very early stages of my build and will have similar access challenges making it necessary to bring all materials in by SxS.

Keep up the good work ! Its awesome !

And speaking of picturesque, that photo of your boys - the expressions on their faces! - proves that every moment of effort getting this thing done has been worth it, doesn't it?

Yes, it certainly does! Thank you so much.

Another weekend trip on the anniversary of starting this dream as noted by my beautiful bride. Siding almost complete (So close!...). Going up again this weekend to finish. As many have said, it always takes longer than you think...

Very nice cabin. And reading your story was inspiring. And a big atta boy to beautiful wife’s.
Keep up the positive attitude. It shows in your work and in how you have approached this project. Glad to see take one make one happening in many ways. You are opening up the doors to new opportunities to learn and be together as a family.
Now you need more wheelers for the family.
Best wishes n stay safe.

Thank you. Yes it is, from the HD big box store. It’s the Touch ‘n Foam Professional 200 kit. Again I have a 10x12 cabin with 12/12 roof. I read all the reviews and took a chance. Overall I’m happy with it given I’ve never used anything like this before. I think following suggested temperature guidelines are critical. I was borderline and had to crank my wood stove to get the metal surface warm enough. Especially as I did it in late November in south central VT on a “mild” day...

Is there a name for that style of footings/pads you used with the gravel box with blocks on top?

subflooring. Thick did you spray that foam on? Are you going to spray more on or fill with fiberglass/wool?

Not that I’m aware of. It’s just an addition to contain the crushed stone above grade without having to spread a stone base under the entire cabin. I removed organic material below grade, laid geo-textile fabric into hole, filled with crushed stone and compacted, placed alternating 4x4x16” blocks over that. No change in PLS (plumb, level, square) through first winter, we shall see this spring if I remain lucky...

Floor is 3/4” AdvanTec, then Owens Corning Foamular 150 (1.5” thick/R7.5), then 1/2” plywood and eventually a floating laminate flooring over that. We were up last week and it felt comfortable underfoot once wood stove warmed everything up. The ceiling is sprayed about an 1” thick (R6.5 +/-) and serves as vapor barrier and insulation sufficient enough with my wood stove. I don’t intend on adding more insulation however I’ll be filling between rafters with wood TBD...

Thanks for the detail. I am a noob so I was unfamiliar with that stuff . Looks pretty handy. Keep us posted of your opinion if it changes please.

Ol Slim, one other thing to note is while applying, you need to keep the flow going. If you stop and wait to long (more than 20-30 seconds), the nozzle will begin to foul (luckily they supply extras)... Have a plan as to direction of movement, ladder(s) at the ready and work area free and clear of any obstruction that may cause you to stop.

Really picturesque cabin and great story.

I’m struggling with the shake vs. board and batten exterior myself trying to decide. Interesting too ive been thinking about using foam board for insulation under my floor, I’ve had enough of mucking around with fiberglass battens for one lifetime!

I hope I make progress as quick as you have👌

Thank you Erik. I'm very pleased with the siding combination decision. The rigid floor insulation has really worked out well. I was at the cabin several times this past winter with temps in the single digits (Fahrenheit), and after a few hours of running the wood stove the floor was quite comfortable underfoot. And BTW - I'm with you on the fiberglass battens! Again, best of luck with your build.

GW, you have done something Great!
Fwiw, we started out 1st cabin in 1983 when I was 30. Much like you I had some salvaged wood (1896 barn tear-down) and wanted to maximize that and minimize out of pocket expenses. My self plan morphed as I went, lol.
At now 69 My wife and I are still proud of that build, it has stood the test of time, had guests of close friends and family, and as of a couple years ago is still going with new owners. As the commercial says," memories-priceless".
The thoughtfulness and quality of your work will last. And, most important, it looks like you balance the work and play pretty well.
ENJOY, it is well earned

Thank you gcrank! It's been fun building and seeing how it continues to evolve as I go... Pics below of a small project completed, another just beginning and some renderings of where my thoughts are going... The unfinished exposed wall to the right of the composting closet will be the doorway into the new bedroom addition off the back of the cabin (in progress).
