October 22-23: Windows, cut wall opening/connection, and assembled Futon. Also insulated the floor and walls however, in the interest of progress I did not get pictures.

December 26-27: Merry Christmas! Not much snow, but a lot of ice! So I was worried that the culvert wasn't large enough but I got it for free. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'll have to replace it with a larger pipe later this summer during the dry season.

Looking good. Before you add any more to your driveway I would add a second culvert. You dont want to come back one spring and find it all washed away.

Thanks Brett. If I may, your thoughts on adding a second or even a third culvert of the same diameter versus replacing the one existing (I think it's 15") with say a 24-30" diameter?

I'd probably do another culvert. Backup is always good. Is there another low spot near.
Eh, never know what free or reduced culverts are around.
Your cabin looks great man.

Thanks Brett— Definitely nothing smaller. This spring that situation will only get worse with all the snow melt!

That’s another option as I do have more pipe however it’s smaller. I could add a 12” on both sides of the one in place. But my concern with that is clogging with sticks and leaves.

And thanks for the compliment on the cabin. It just continues to evolve…

Pipe flow isnt linear with the pipe diameter. You would have to look up the specifics but a 15in pipe will flow quite a bit more than a 12in.

Stormwater design is what I do for a living, so if you want some help determining the actual culvert size needed to pass the 100 year storm I can give you a rough idea pretty easily. I will need the lat/long for the culvert, or the drainage area size going to the culvert and I can make some assumptions.

And you always should prefer a larger diameter culvert in lieu of multiple smaller pipes, but smaller pipes will require more maintenance and can get the job done.

Definitely want to get 99% of the water going thru the pipes or the road will eventually disappear.

jsahara24, that would be greatly appreciated. Can I get your email or other means of communication so I’m not broadcasting my location here for all to see? Thank you

jsahara24, Thank you so much for that very valuable information. Wow! The 100 year flood event… although I was not in the area at the time of hurricane Irene, I do remember (as I live in the Northeast), the devastating impact it had on Vermont and the area where my camp is now.

Below is a video about the storm 10 years after…
