So the other morning, at my house in the ghetto, I noticed some shiny metal objects laying on the ground in the back yard. I cautiously approached, to find a battery and a camera on a motorized mount, bent up a bit. Hmm. Somebody must have pitched it over the fence, there is a school on the other side. Maybe it's stolen..

I sent a photo to my pal Mark who has one of these Gopro cameras. He says maybe it fell off a drone, good thought. Last night he came to my cabin for drive in movie night (1917, pretty good) and took it home to see what's on it. Hey maybe it shows it coming down I joked! Sure enough, an hour later he sends me this video!

So the battery must be for the drone. But where is the drone? Well the stuff landed almost under a big tree in my yard, so I'll be checking when I get back there later today.

Might be able to find out who the owner is if anything is registered on the internet. Not crazy about a drone filming over my house, but likely innocent, and I like toys too. What would you do?

I suspect was just testing it out, ie school next door, most like to try it out in the large open areas like schools or parks. I think it was innocent too. Maybe out of TX range???

Cool. I do want to get one of those DJI Phantoms and fly my 40 acres.

There was also footage of him riding dirt bikes so he must be a cool dude.. If I can get his contact info I will call him and say I'm FAA conducting an investigation. After he sweats a bit I'll give it back.

First I need to look in the tree for the drone. Wife wants to stay another night in the cabin so it will have to wait a day.

I finally got this drone wreckage out of my tree a few months ago. Twice I put ads in the local online lost and found (Nextdoor app), nobody claimed it. One kid replied that he wanted it for parts, so he got it.

I did keep the GoPro though, and over last weekend played with it and got it working, was able to download pictures and video to my computer.

What's next, what do these do that's better than using your cell phone? It's an older model, Hero3+.

I think my Gopro is a Hero 3 as well. Great little cameras. I keep one clipped on my backpack shoulder strap. The problem is... well for me.... is editing hours of video footage into a video short and interesting that gives viewers a glimpse of what you were seeing.... yeah without boring them to death.

Oh and just getting around to editing video... I have clips from Nepal hiking - 2015, Chile and Argentina hiking - 2017, Ireland and Scotland hiking - 2019, oh and plenty of footage from southern Utah and the Colorado trail that sit in my computer!

Here is our YouTube channel... you can see what kind of video that little camera can do! HERE IT IS

Thanks. Watched the Moon House video, that is so neat! What limited traveling I've done, touring from the border down through Montana, Colorado, Utah has been fantastic. I'll watch more when I get back to my desktop with sound.

So that's the deal, the GoPro is better for longer videos where you won't be holding your cell phone the whole time?

They are also great for underwater footage. My snorkel mask has a go pro mount, we have also used them mountain snowmobile riding and I have some awesome under water footage of a 225lb halibut i caught in South East Alaska.

They are pretty neat for recording motorcycle rides on twist back country roads and 'road tests'. Ive watched quite a few on the mc forums Ive been on.
And/or recording a repair process that you want for future ref; ie, you take something apart and it may be a while before you can get the parts and reassemble.

I have two gopro cameras. There good for all types of things that can destroy a normal camera. Once I even zip ties mine to a stick and threw it in the river for the dogs to bring back. They did.

Thanks guys. OK I get the gist of it, better for longer adventure stuff. This one has a 32gb card, about right?

Yeah a 32gb holds a lot of hours. You can also set the Gopro up to do time lapse... that might be useful for you as a backup security camera. I'm not sure how you do that though... Google it!

This GoPro appears to need a new battery, dead overnight. I see I can buy just a battery, or they have these pack charger thingys. It charges on any USB port, like a phone, right?

Or is the Hero3 not worth putting any money into?

The Hero 3 is a good little camera, it's wort buying a new battery for if you're going to use it. Should be able to just plug the camera into USB to charge the battery... and, or take video off it. Gopro site I think has a free video editing software you can download.

Nope but dang near! I was going to ask... you said you watched the Moon House video, did you mean The Citadel? We've been to moon house but I don't think I did a video of it??

I watched the Citadel. I had never heard of it and was so impressed I googled it and saw photos of what I thought I saw in your video, and it was called the Moon House, so I looked that up too. I guess I'm mistaken.

Yeah... The Citadel is incredible BUT... the hike out to it takes route finding... no marked trail, and is really exposed, one slip and you plummet 400 feet into a canyon. I hesitated to even put that video up on YouTube. The BLM WILL NOT give people directions on how to get there and discourage those who mention it. When we asked about it the first thing out of their mouths was, "Who told you about The Citadel? " the second thing was, "Somebody is going to get killed out there." Then we got grilled on our experience in with this kind of hiking/climbing. We have DONE A LOT of hiking is southern Utah slick rock and canyon country so are experienced and cautious.... we know when to back off and when we have the skill set to keep going... we have turned around. Oh, and we aren't in our 20's, our brain cells are fully formed, we actually know we aren't invincible!

That whole Cedar Mesa/ Bears Ears area is incredible for ancient ruins and fortunately most of the really, really good, well preserved ruins are inaccessible to those not willing to commit to backpacking in or possessing the skills to get there.

Don't have to worry about me, my world travels are all virtual anymore, and I do a lot of it, and dreaming, especially the Pacific islands.

My wife and I did see a lot of the Rockies, as I mentioned, years ago. Also some of the easier canyon areas like Arch Rock, Grand Canyon, Brice. Fascinating.

Somewhere in Colorado, about half our lives ago.
