Hello! I was about to order slate tile for under my wood stove (the wood stove will be on a six-inch riser with Hardibacker board between the riser and the slate). But then I saw that it's not frost resistant. Even though my wood stove will be in my cabin, the cabin could get below freezing in the winter when we're not using it. Will my slate be fine since it will not get wet? On the Home Depot web page for this slate tile, someone asked if they could use it on a porch where it would experience freezing temps. A "community" responder said it would be fine if they sealed the slate before winter. So I think it will be okay, but wanted to see if any members on this forum had any experience with slate tile in their cabins in freezing temps. Thank you very much in advance!

It should be okay under the stove. Just don't wash the floor in winter.

Not related to the freezing question. When I was researching this (a long time ago - so rules may have changed), Slate was approved under a wood stove as long as you use cement board under it.

So does ceramic and porcelain tile, even a continuous sheet of metal. The cement board should be 1/2" thick. It is there to help slow the heat transfer to the combustibles under it. Stove maker recommendation must be followed too.

you will be doing exactly what we did in ours and it has been no problem over 5 years. Slate tile over cement board under the wood stove in Northern Minnesota. Last winter 35 below zero, no issues
