Hey all, new to the forum. I’ve been browsing the posts for months gathering info for my cabin build and have got some fantastic info from here. Just finalizing my plans to start my build in June. I’m trying to figure how to cover my deck. The cabin is a 16’x24’, 9’ high 2x6 walls and 9/12 pitch roof with a 6’ covered deck off the gable end. I’m going with 2x12 or 2x10 at a minimum cathedral rafters with a ridge board for the main cabin roof, mainly for enough room for batt insulation. I’m struggling with how to continue the gable with the 2x12’s and get to a 6” fascia board on the covered deck gable to tie in with the rest of the 6” facia. I don’t think it’s possible to make it look right. Another option i think I can do is go with 2x6 rafters for over the deck, I think this will still be just enough structure with a common rafter length of around 10’ to support the tin roof and the amount of snow-load that will actually stay on it. I will have 6x6 corner posts on the deck and a beam from the cabin wall corner to the corner post to support the bottom of the deck rafters. But I think this way will cause me an issue with needing the side beam to be higher then my top plate to be able to still cut some kind of birds-mouth in the rafter and have the top of the 6” rafter the same height as the 12” rafter. I’ve spent countless hours on google articles and images trying to figure the right way to do this. Any suggestions on how to have a cathedral ceiling with sufficient insulation and continue the gable over the deck and keep 6” facia?
As I wrote this it occurred to me maybe I should go with 8” facia All around and use 8” rafters for the deck roof. This would be better for load support and maybe aesthetics, but I think I still need the side beam higher then the top plate for a birds-mouth of some kind. Any suggestions are appreciated. Sorry for rambling on.

Why dont you just allow the bottom/vertical cut of the rafters dictate the size of facia? If you want a specific size you can make a horizontal cut in the rafter tail to trim it down.

How you frame and support under the 4 corners of the deck roof is prob more important than the size of facia. Are you putting a sono tube, block or foundation under each corner of the decks vertical corner posts?

I'm going to do that exact thing Brettny, cut the rafter tail bottom to be a 6" facia board or maybe 8" now. My problem is getting from a 12" rafter in the Gable over the deck to a 6" Gable facia board. The cabin will be on 2 PT laminated skids inside one foot from the perimeter, on sidewalk blocks on a compacted gravel base. I am going to have to bolt the deck/roof corner posts to the last rim and floor joist corner of the deck. I can not go to a permanent foundation because of my closeness to the river. I have a surveyed permanent building pocket if I were to go that route and then the restrictions is more than I want to build. min 600 sq ft, 6' floor elevation, 60 meter setback from river etc.... if I keep it on skids and "temporary" I can build it where ever I want on the land I own.

I think I understand what you mean now for the facia and different rafter thickness. Really the only place you should have to hide it is in the soffit between the cabin and porch. Are you leaving the bottom of the roof/sheething exposed from the under side in the porch?

I dont think going from 6 to 8in facia will help in the area your asking about. Theres still going to be a step on the underside. I'm assuming your going to match up the top of both different depth rafters so the roof is one level?

There are many ways to get a roof over your porch and I think your doing the easiest one. However you can run the roof the other way, so a lower slope with the ridge going the same direction as the cabin or even a double hip roof.

I've considered doing it other ways but I really want the look of this one Owen built for someone. I just can't quite figure out what he did here for the trusses over the deck or the size of the trusses over the cabin for that matter even.

And I'm too cheap to buy a set of plans off the internet which I may not even use if not quite the right ones lol.

Sorry I missed this reply Brettny. Yes the step you refer to is what I'm trying to avoid. I will be using metal soffit around the entire cabin and in the porch gable as well. Yes the top of all the rafters will be the same height. I was thinking if I went to 8" trusses in the porch area and cut the rafter tails on the eaves to 8" facia that might be a better option?

You will still have a step in the soffit. I guess the other way would be to transition your overhang to 2x8s. That's alot of material or alot of cutting to avoid. Simple step in the sofit.

If you box in the sofit it could not be a step like your thinking.
